Mass adoption is finally happening...and not in the way you might think.

It finally clicked for me today....mass adoption is actually happening as we speak.

I used to think mass adoption meant I can pay with BTC everywhere I go. And I still think that we’ll get there eventually - but that’s not a requirement for mass adoption. It never was.

BTC was originally envisioned as a P2P payment system - but in retrospect that was never what was unique about it. Quick, semi-anonymous P2P payments were already a solved problem in the world. (Visa - The first world at least.) Transmitting value over the internet was a solved problem. (PayPal/Visa.)

What was actually novel and has tremendous value to the world was the decentralized store of value. It doesn’t matter if it was Satoshi’s vision or not. That’s the reason everyone is buying bitcoin. It’s way too reductionist to say people are buying it just because the price is going up. It’s going up and staying up because people are finally appreciating the intrinsic value in the system.

Scaling is on everyone’s mind - but scaling isn’t standing in the way of mass adoption. It never was. It’s not even a matter of block sizes or lightning or whatever. We already have preexisting solutions for payments and banking and all of the above - and it wouldn’t take much to adapt them to crypto. Whether coinbase puts out a debit card or your bank let’s you deposit BTC and spend Fiat against it - those things are going to happen years before solutions to scaling the chain itself to worldwide capacity or every mom and pop has a POS system that can accept BTC.

Coinbase is just about to break into the top 100 apps. Futures markets, derivatives, daily CNBC coverage - the dream is already happening and it’s happening crazy fast. This is exactly what it felt like when the internet, cell phones, smart phones and Facebook became a thing. It was a slow burn for a while and then all of a sudden it went viral and was everywhere before you knew it. In 1997 almost no one I knew owned a cell phone. In 98 everyone did. Same with going online with AOL and Facebook.

Will I be paying for coffee with BTC this time next year? Probably not. But literally millions of conversations about BTC and crypto are going to happen over Thanksgiving. A lot of people are going to suddenly realize it’s not a fad or a scam....this time next year I wouldn’t be surprised if everyone I know has coinbase on their phone. This year to a lot of people it was still a curiosity they can ignore. Next year its going to be something everyone needs to at least know about.

And I’m not even going to guess the price....but it’ll be a really big number.
