What is the status on Lightning?

Has been really quiet lately. It seems a year or so ago, it was daily posts about exponential growth of the network and adoption, and now, nothing.

Also, a year+ ago you would get flamed, if not banned, for any kind of scepticism, but in the hopes that tempers have settled a bit: Do people still expect Lightning to be the second coming of bitcoin? And the one true way to do smallish commercial transactions? Or is there still some hold-outs who expect on-chain coffee purchases to be a thing.

I can't help but feel that the shine has gone off this tech. According to many, it was "in production" and "ready for use" last year, yet adoption does not seem to be happening, so what is the holdup?
