PSA: bitcoin.org is untrustworthy and newbies should not be directed there

Yesterday I learned that since July bitcoin dot org has linked, on its front page, to a scammy site "MoonPay", which among other things

  • advertises that it supports over 80 shitcoins
  • advertises that it is supported by the scam site bitcoin dot com
  • has exhorbitant fees
  • uses "crypto" as short for "cryptocurrency"
  • edit appear to be the same entity as the bitcoin dot com exchange (search "bitcoincom" on that certificate listing)

It used to be that you could point newbies to this site, being assured that it would provide a neutral source of information about the Bitcoin network, free from exchanges and their broken incentives. If it were to link to some exchange this exchange would need to meet an extremely high bar of trustworthiness, privacy preservation, and support for safe and sane Bitcoin usage. This site fails to meet even an extremely low bar, and I think it's reasonable to conclude that Cobra, the site's anonymous owner, is no longer merely shady but is instead actively malicious.

A much better site for information is https://btcinformation.org/ for the Bitcoin network, or https://bitcoincore.org/ for Bitcoin Core.

cc /u/Bashco we should probably also change the link in the sidebar.
