New username for this one.. Well, I'm doing it. For better or worse. I'm all in. I just refi-ed my house, and putting my equity in BTC. I'm sure many of you will tell me that I'm nuts. I have lived in the same house for 20+ years. I bought a repo in a nice neighborhood for cheap and put a lot of sweat into it over the years, repairing and remodeling. I built of equity and worked hard to pay down the loan. I just made throwaway account for obvious reasons but I'm a regular poster here. I actually have first hand experience with these "letter writing campaigns" from the IRS side. I worked for the IRS and helped them with a different "letter writing campaign" as they call them a few years ago. These are broad and very error-prone fishing expeditions on their part. They do these for a few reasons. First is they simply don't have the resources to go after everybody and instead do a letter writing campaign to try and scare as many people possible into paying more voluntarily so they don't have to do anything. Second is they're not really sure if you owe more money or not since they have really bad data. They are almost certainly joining up some of their internal tax filing database tables with external datasets (probably coinbase) and trying to estimate how much they think you owe. For example the coinbase data might have shown that you sold $20K worth of

I've had a hard time explaining to people what's going on and why it is a big deal. You do need some historical context for how the US law system works and our general policies. Basically they want to track, control, bar etc etc everything. They want to do everything bitcoin was meant to keep them from doing. Let's be perfectly clear. They can't control the protocol, so they are just fencing American's in and using an oppressive profound capitalist legal regulatory system to make it so difficult to offer Americans services that no one does, where they then by turn over domestic control to, you guessed it the banks, So the US government is overtly hostile to small entrepreneurs in the space, to innovative, low maintainance, low overhead people and the various projects that make the space a common man's tool. And since they know they can't win a fair fight, they are lying about jurisdictional reach to threaten and intimidate every major foreign exchange.
Dear BTM owners plz stop hiding fees in artificial/Fake spreads. I see your 5-10% spread. Do you want to be regulated because that's how you get regulated.

Creating this post so I can look back on it in 5 years. The level of FUD in this subreddit is remarkable. We’ve all been saying 8.5k retrace, and yet as soon as we move towards it the FUD appears. The longer we move sideways and towards 8k, the more stable a base we build for this bull run. If you want to sell, sell. Hi, I wrote another post yesterday about how it has been more difficult to buy Bitcoin for me as a customer of Swedbank. And I thought it was just an error but no, Swedbank is actually censuring transactions to Bitstamp's IBAN number SI56070000002199468. I've been messaging with them then just got a straight "we're not going to do the transaction to that IBAN number." Then I called them to get a clearer understanding why. And the girl I talked to really tried her best not to sound like a robot when she repeatedly said the same thing as they wrote in the messages. Then I talked to another girl who started saying cliché things like AML/KYC, anti-terrorist, that bitcoin is anonymous, untraceable, scams, "must protect the customers" and bogus shit which I couldn't help me to correct her. I really tried to get a hang of if it was Swedbank who thought it was something shady with Bitstamp or if it they didn't like Bitcoin. I asked them to escalate it

I received a letter from the IRS today that accuses me of breaking the law. Yet I believe I have properly reported and paid all the taxes I was supposed to on my bitcoins. They've sent out three letters, and mass mailing started this week. The three letters are: 6174: Basically means they know you have crypto 6174-A: Basically means they think you broke the law and haven't paid your taxes, and may or may not start enforcement actions on you soon 6173: Means they are sure you broke the law, and are coming after you now. I received 6174-A. Even once I prove I did everything correctly, it's probably going to have cost me many hours and maybe a lot of money to an accountant. Think about it this way, Exchanges devote most of their security attention to protecting their own coins. All a hacker has to do is get access to an exchanges KYC data and now they have a name, ssn, photo, dob, address, and phone number, and BTC address for every person who has ever withdrawn coins from that exchange. Individuals are much easier to hack or manipulate than companies, especially if you already have all of their personally identifiable information. Call your representatives and explain these risks. I believe the risks that this imposes on everyday people far out weighs the damage that can be caused by "terrorist financing", or money laundering. Well, I'd read Lightning was complicated. But I've just downloaded Zap for Desktop (I don't have a smartphone). And it's just so easy . It started automatically and showed me the passphrase which I wrote down. It invited me to set up a password which I did. It then showed me a 'fund wallet' address following which it spent 6 minutes ‘Fetching latest data from the blockchain’. In case you all are overpaying in fees, the transfer rates are VERY low. I made 2 transfer with 1 sat/byte about a hour ago and they had a confirmation in about 13 minutes. I think a renegade time traveler brought the Bitcoin idea from the future to the past. This mostly occurs when the banks change ownership and records are lost. Even worse is simple, stupid mistakes. Like some other customer doesn't pay for their box and the bank wrongly drills out YOUR box. How often does this occur? It happens to over 30,000 safe boxes PER YEAR !! I see here how people often recommend safe deposit boxes to store seed phrases or even actual USB devices or hardware wallets. I use to spend money on take-out, brand clothing, sporting events and a bunch of subscriptions like Netflix. Now every time I spend i have this feeling that money couldve gone to bitcoin. Since then I've learn to cook very basic healthy food, plain no named clothing, stay at home to watch sports and cancel my Netflix subscription. Funny thing is i saved so much for bitcoin i didnt even spend all what I save into bitcoin, I built an emergency fund, paid my debt faster(which meant I save at higher rater) while putting in what i had left into what I originally saved to begin with; buying bitcoin. Many exchanges are trading more BTC than what is owed to their customers, ie. they have non-solvent BTC reserves and are trading paper Bitcoin. QuadrigaCX (extinct Canadian exchange) revealed that Cotten gambled away its reserves which were owed to its customers. Mt. Gox (largest exchange until 2014) was insolvent, but still operated until its demise. Had the majority of customers demanded custody of their keys , exchanges would need to BUY BTC to have enough to operate, otherwise collapse. Keeping exchanges honest with their reserves = extreme BUY pressure . Recent evidence on fractional reserve: It was obvious during the first few hours after the launch of GRIN, that the trading volume on exchanges was greater than its total supply. Grin’s inflation schedule is calculable, and it requires 1440 blocks confirmation for coinbase reward maturity. You can't spend the coinbase output before 1440 blocks, but yet exchanges listed and traded as if you could. NOT YOUR KEYS, NOT YOUR
