I think this is a fundamental issue for Bitcoin as a currency. If it were to increase in value by a significant amount on a regular basis -- even "just" 10% per year -- why would anyone ever spend it? The USD decreases in value by 2-3% each year, so people have incentive to spend dollars rather than hang on to them. But an appreciating currency creates the opposite incentive. So why would people ever use Bitcoin as a currency? Edit: To clarify, I'm asking why people wouldn't just spend their USD -- a currency that is going down in value -- instead of their BTC. I made a comment on a post in r/personalfinancecanada and the post was about someone asking if they should be saving in Canadian dollars with such high inflation. All I said was how due to currency debasement and the problems with FIAT currency, one should not save in FIAT and only have 3-6 months of expenses in FIAT and invest the rest. I said how I think we have entered an inflationary period and it's going to get worse. I never mentioned Bitcoin or suggested it and the amount of downvotes and backlash was very interesting. One guy checked my account and said "ah the average wisdom of a r/Bitcoin member" or something like that. It was just very interesting to see people's defense toward FIAT and the amount of hatred towards Bitcoin. Hey all, I heard this idea in a podcast I watched and it got me thinking. Given the situation with some exchanges having to stop withdraws gives the idea that some exchanges are fractional reserves. Does that mean there are some fake-bitcoin out there that exchanges have promised that don’t exist? I’ve been thinking about the stock-to-flow ratio predictions. Of course, models are never the complete truth. Regardless, it is an interesting way to think about bitcoin price. If there is greater supply being bought and sold, then that would artificially increase the supply and artificially drive down price. So, not only is bitcoin on sale because of the bear market, but it is on sale because exchanges are being fraudulent. Any thoughts here? I don't care about the other coins trying to hang on the coattails which have spawned from the real innovation. This is the wrong way to think about bitcoin. I don't care about investing in bitcoin to 'get in low and sell high'. This is the wrong way to think about bitcoin. But I do believe in bitcoin, the protocol, the philosophy, and am convinced it will become an important, integral part of the global financial system system over the long term. First post here, but I want to address some of the sentiment I've seen with this crash... Backstory: When I first bought BTC, I saw it as a risky investment and was excited to get a 50% ROI. When it quickly jumped from $80 to $120, I sold all 40, and it was the easiest $1,600 I ever made. I do not regret that I could have pulled millions at ATH, because 50% is a great return on a short, volatile, risky investment. I later bought back at ~$10k, $20k, and $30k, because I learned over time and came to believe in the underlying technology and the ability for cryptocurrency to change the way money works. Since then, I have watched every rise and fall, every meme of the vertical roller coaster in both directions. I don't DCA (although that's wise), just hold. I saw the price hit $70,000, now I am curious if we will see sub $10k or even $1k. But, if it goes to zero, I lost it because I believe in a concept that may not work out - no regrets. Here to make everyone feel better about their situation. I'm not rich - nor am I in the top 10 percent of income earners. I had some cash mostly left behind by my wonderful grandparents and my own money as well. Got greedy when I was up 20k in March and bought more. Learned a valuable lesson. When you watch your portfolio drop past 50 percent it has an affect on you. I'm at the stage where I've accepted that this was meant to happen as a learning experience but it also solidified my determination for long term savings. Ultimately it's a good thing because I would have spent the money on bullshit had I sold my gains before the crash. I'm now taking a 10 year view on this technology. I hope to god that I'll not need any of it in the near to mid future - that's the only thing I worry about on occasion but at the same time I've always worried about retirement and having nothing in the bank when I'm too old. I've been in Bitcoin since 2014. I've seen the ups and downs and rode the rollercoaster all this time. This crash has me a little bit spooked though, I will admit. For the newbies I urge you to move your bitcoin into a decentralized wallet. You don't actually own any bitcoin on these platforms. In simple terms, it's an IOU from these exchanges to grant you your bitcoin. One of the advantages of bitcoin is that you are essentially your own bank. This also means there's no FDIC to ensure you get your money in the event of bankruptcy. I would hate for anyone to lose their hard earned money, especially from no fault of their own. Don't put your faith in these exchanges, none of us know their true legitimacy and protection. Setting up a wallet is much more simple than you may think. I have been studying bitcoin for several months now trying to find any evidence or flaw in the design and history of this technology. The further you go down the rabbit hole, the more certain you become that BTC has the potential to change every facet of our current society and culture. The consequences of ingrained unquestioning of the monetary system has been all that we know. Repeated cycles of boom and bust whereas each bust is a bit worst than the previous one. I have spent the last 2 years building up my bitcoin balance. Im not rich by any means but I worked hard and stashed as much as possible.. Im no genius when it comes to bitcoin but I understood the basics… I always saw your posts about cold storage and “not your keys not your crypto”…I got suckered in with the idea of compounding interest with Celsius and bitcoin and even my fiancĂŠ set up a Celsius account and she put about 8k into it. I have about .6 bitcoin in my Celsius account. I got a late start in bitcoin and figured this would help my trajectory and speed up my gains. The intention of bitcoin was is to be an entirely decentralized, trustless form of currency - not a get rich quick scheme. Overall the market needs a cleanse. His intention was never to use bitcoin as a launchpad for money hungry institutions, high leveraged trading, rug pull scam coins, high emission defi ponzis, yield earning centralized exchanges or even stablecoins. In case anyone was wondering, yes banks still suck. Got locked out of my accounts for 3 days just for buying only 15k worth of Bitcoin. This was not from debt, this was my own cash that I couldn't use. No amount of escalations or complaints could make them give me my access again. "We need more time to investigate the destination of this transaction" is all they would say. Then they forced me to physically travel to a branch to ID myself. Travel was required because they are closing branches since they are not needed. To be clear I have no issue with a quick lock to check a transaction. But I do have issue with not unlocking me once I've identified and confirmed, and with making me wait 3 days. The feeling of being unbanked for just 3 days is nasty. I feel for the early adopters that lost their banking entirely. In any case it's probably similar because I decided it was important to change banks. I can't let them do this again. I'm from the UK and I have decided to withdraw my Lifetime ISA with a penalty of -25%, so that I can use the money to invest into bitcoin. Its supposed to go towards a first house deposit. I can now accumulate over 1 bitcoin, which is a milestone I have always wanted to reach. I no longer care about buying a house with a mortgage, now that I own bitcoin. I'm very lucky to have nice parents who let me live with them, so I have no real reason to move out. I think in my social circle I am secretly known as the crazy Bitcoin guy because it’s basically all I talk about. I am not sure if it’s as simple as, my delivery method sucks or people just couldn’t be bothered to learn about money or Bitcoin.
