NIST Has Corrected BCash Goof-Up

Just in case people haven't heard... The National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) recently published a 'draft' document on cryptocurrency that included some inaccuracies on Bitcoin and Bitcoin Cash. Many including myself contacted the NIST to point out the errors and request they be corrected. As of yesterday I can confirm that NIST has indeed listened to the crypto community and you can find the updated language below . Keep in mind this is still a 'draft' document and open for public comment so feel free to help them polish things up even more :) From: dylan.yaga@nist.gov Thank you for your comments. You, along with many others, expressed concern on section 8.1.2. To help foster a full transparency approach on the editing of this section, I am sending the revised section to you for further comment. 8.1.2 Bitcoin Cash (BCH or BCC1) In 2017, Bitcoin users adopted an improvement proposal for Segregated Witness (known as SegWit, where transactions a

Sooo... You guys are aware that Bitmain is selling used equipment ?

I don't understand people buying Antminers. Bought from them in 2013-2014. Here is what i discovered investigating why one of the Antminer was full of dust. Here is what Bitmain does. 1-They manufacture Antminers. 2-Keep the production of newer units "secret". 3-Calculate very thoroughly when to announce and sell them so their costumers will be (or think they will be) able to make some pennies. 4 -Dump their used equipment on the market by batches as the new version batches comes in freshly manufactured. 5- Repeat. Conclusion: Unless you have privileged access to miners or free electricity, avoid mining. Invest directly in Bitcoins. Sending 1 BTC to Bitmain to get miners might result in 1.00xxx BTC. Why is that ? Because Bitmain sells the Antminers very close to the amount of BTC it will be able to mine in the future considering difficulty. Hours of work for close to nothing. Moon Math Update: Bitcoin is ready to grow again

Go to http://moonmath.win for the full update and rainbow charts I've said this before: When I get quiet, it's time to accumulate. I've been quiet. Before I went quiet I suggested it was a good time to DCA into a position. The jury is far from out on that, but I think moon math is tracking pretty well with this retrace. Moon Math takes a long-term bull perspective. It doesn't say "Insane awesome returns forever!" Instead, it invites you to consider our current price position against past trends. I know for a fact that some people look at the rainbow charts and think "Oh boy, we're in the red and it's only up from here." That's insane. Don't do that again. Projecting the price based on the trend from the ATH isn't going to work out for anyone. The Moon Math we're seeing today is probably a better projector of performance than any time in the last several months (I'll get that time travel feature done someday). Is this

Now that transactions go through for 1 satoshi (LOL) can we agree we survived a Serious Attack by CoinBase/al.?

Seriously, we are at 1 satoshi now. Even 0 satoshi go through. Free. The only reason the mempool got so big is Coinbase and other pump and dumpers which try to push their bitcoin ca$h garbage on everyone. Bitcoin Ca$h has zero reasons to exist anymore. Remove the spam attack and 1MB, combined with segwit and lightning, is plenty enough. But what pisses me off the most is that the most recent 2,000+ satoshi thing is 100% an attack on the bitcoin protocol. Maybe newbies saw the high fees and just assumed it was normal. It's not. A few players pushed a lot of spam transaction to clug up the mempool so fees would spike, in an attempt to KILL bitcoin. Period. All in all, bitcoin survived yet another attack to kill it, perhaps the 100th since it was created, and we should be happy about that. Coinbase et al. (I mention coinbase a lot because it was revealed they clugged up 50% of the mempool alone!) failed and probably ran out of cash at some point. So let's raise a glass to Bit

PSA: You can and should move your coins off of Coinbase for free via GDAX

If you have any coin on Coinbase and you are not planning to sell it in the near future, it is highly recommended you move it offline to your own wallet. If you don’t own a wallet, look at the Ledger Nano S or Trezor, they aren’t free but their price is cheap for the security and peace of mind. Once you have a hardware wallet or a means of holding your own keys, open an account at GDAX. It’s owned by Coinbase and the application process is exactly the same. When your account is verified, transfer your Coinbase to GDAX using GDAX’s interface. From GDAX you can transfer them to your wallet’s address for free. I used to keep my coins on Coinbase primarily to see day-to-day account balances, but there are plenty of free apps that can do the same thing. I now use Blockfolio. My first raspberry pi 3 BTC full node: https://imgur.com/6yMWyxj I'm not computer savvy, so this took a while for me to set up. I followed this guide: https://www.weusecoins.com/full-bitcoin-node-on-a-raspberry-pi-3-with-or-without-a-pidrive/#adding Instructions are pretty straight forward but some of the command lines didn't really work for me so I had to research quite a bit to get it working. I haven't made any profit from btc investment yet, and I know a lot of people are in negative, especially if you got in last December. However, I really believe in this technology and I just wanted to be a part of this grand experiment. Total cost for setting up a full node was about $70 USD, so it isn't too much. I have a pretty decent internet connection, and after 7 hours, I have downloaded about 30gb worth of blocks. It was pretty fun setting this up, and I encourage everyone to participate! Thanks to Bitcoin, I am Happily Self-Unemployed

Bitcoin turned out to be an effective way for me to end my employment....hopefully forever. I began investing in Bitcoin in late 2014 after a dear friend shared a post about his experience buying Bitcoin on Google+. I had heard of it twice before that, but didn't enter the game. After he posted, an angel showed up in the comments....presumably one of the early successful investors. He offered anyone willing to participate a little donation, if they jumped through the hoops of getting a wallet and providing an address. He also happily answered some of our questions. I took the bait. It wasn't long before I felt the power of crypto and was unsatisfied with my donation level investment. I remember commenting in the post, I am going to experiment with $100...which makes me LOL today. Soon enough, I started schemin. $100 turned into $300, and $300 into over a $1000 by the end of 2014. Hooked I was, like any drug will do. Early 2015 saw me turn to raising funding through family/f

Bitcoin price is down, such bad luck... maybe

There is a Taoist story of an old farmer who had worked his crops for many years. One day his horse ran away. Upon hearing the news, his neighbors came to visit. "Such bad luck," they said sympathetically. "May be," the farmer replied. The next morning the horse returned, bringing with it three other wild horses. "How wonderful," the neighbors exclaimed. "May be," replied the old man. The following day, his son tried to ride one of the untamed horses, was thrown, and broke his leg. The neighbors again came to offer their sympathy on his misfortune. "May be," answered the farmer. The day after, military officials came to the village to draft young men into the army. Seeing that the son's leg was broken, they passed him by. The neighbors congratulated the farmer on how well things had turned out. "May be," said the farmer. Submitted January 26, 2018 at 05:34PM by CrypticallyDodge http://ift.tt/2GjaYuJ

Venezuela - A Prime Example of Bitcoin Usefulness.

As of my writing 5USD is equal to 1,319,015 VEF Venezuelan Bolivar ... 2 Months ago, 5 USD was worth 545, 450 VEF.. Like in the USA, people used to buy groceries monthly or bi monthly. Now they are living day to day, buying enough food to be able to eat for that day, as they cannot afford to buy groceries for longer than that. On top of that, regulations on their food prevent them buying enough to last over a week, much less a month. The "basic goods basket", which is the amount of money required to buy basic goods for a month is priced at about 8-10 times more than one can make in a month.. So with minimum wage you are able to buy 6-10 meals in a month without waging in electricity, water, garbage disposal, cable, telephone, internet, school, clothing, etc. People spend their days thinking what line are they going to be in tomorrow. You often hear "I have to go to [store] tomorrow, they are going to sell [item]." Every day, that's all that's in their mi

The most annoying thing about this recent correction

Fucking people giving me the whole I told you so thing.... excuse the rant: I made the mistake of telling a close friend of mine that I got in bitcoin early and now the whole office knows and all these little shits are like... you have bitcoin?!? “Awe man, I’m sorry, tough break”. Or “dude you have to sell it all right now that bubble has busted”. For the record, I sold enough to make some off of my initial investment, I’m beyond fine... it’s just annoying how now everyone’s a expert now when they had no idea what the fuck a bitcoin was 6 months ago. Thanks for reading my rant, is anyone else going through this? Submitted January 26, 2018 at 01:29AM by Ignasty64 http://ift.tt/2rKSu3p

I got my first BTC in Jan 2018 near ATH but I’m not embarrassed

I started like many others when the hype was at one of its highest. I bought in when BTC was around 15k USD and ever since then I have been in the red. But I’m not embarrassed nor worried even though crypto is around 20% of all my savings because I have confidence in my risk assessment. Most of all I’m most confident that BTC, crypto currency and blockchain tech IS the future and I’m so proud to be part of it! I know it’ll be worth it in the end:) Submitted January 25, 2018 at 01:49AM by Tankker37 http://ift.tt/2rB2HPP

Boycott All Banks That Suspend Crypto Accounts

They want to play this game? Ok... Lets see who has more muscle, their stupid executives trying to stop crypto for their own benefit or the thousands of customers their business depends on? Today, I saw news of major banks in India suspending BTC accounts. I call everyone who has a bank account with any of those banks to simply close and move your funds elsewhere. I will not hold my funds at any bank that tries to stop this market. Our voices should be heard... just like South Koreans did a week or two ago, were they pressured top officials by signing a petition against banning crypto... So, the fight is not only against banks but also against any government official that tries to stop BTC. Guess how all of them got their jobs... and guess how all of them can lose their jobs? We have the power. Submitted January 23, 2018 at 03:08AM by 76since89 http://ift.tt/2rtoRU3

Thank you r/bitcoin

With today’s dip I have finally bought my way into owning my first 0.10 of bitcoin. While this may not be a significant amount to most people it is quite a bit for me at this time in my life. Currently, I work a warehouse job making only $11.00 a hour. However, to confirm my money that I’ve injected into bitcoin has not been reckless. Actually, it’s quite the opposite as I’ve taken portions of my monthly budget that has typically gone to eating out and and started making all my meals at home. To add to this I’ve cut alcohol completely out of my diet. As a result the left over amount from this has gone into bitcoin. Everyone has their own reason for getting into crypto, mine just happened to coincide with bettering my life with more healthy (and cost efficient) choices. So, thanks for the memes, and motivation to override all the FUD that’s floating around. By proxy you guys (gals) have helped me get back to a physically happier place. Good luck for everyone in 2018. ** Who would

PSA: LN is not a set of channels between each pair of buyer and seller, it is a routed network

It seem to be a common confusion about Lightning Network that it works something along the lines of "I open a channel to a coffee shop with 10mBTC, send multiple txes paying for coffee over it, and once the money run out i close the channel". If it worked like that, then the whole thing would have been rather pointless. Instead it is a network of payment channels. You open a channel once, to a node you respect, and then that node connects to node B that connects to node C that connects to a shop you want to pay. One channel, many shops. It's like the internet - you don't have a cable directly to Facebook, a cable directly to Google and a cable directly to Amazon. Rather, you only have a cable/radio link to an ISP or two, and the data is then routed across the backbone of the internet to reach whatever detination you need. And unlike ISPs in places like USA, the network is uniconnected. Meaning you can pick any node you like at no extra cost. Imagine being able

It was a pleasure being apart of this wonderfulness. But it is time to delete my btc apps and stop checking them daily and HODL for 5 years.

The future is clear: Bitcoin can and will do anything that altcoins can do, but better, using sidechains/layer2. And Bitcoin does it on the blockchain layer that is the most proven, secure, trusted, and decentralized.

Compared to altcoins, Bitcoin’s sidechain/layer2 functionality has more community, competition, tech, people, capital, flexibility. And it is here today. There is Lighting of course with near instant transactions and near zero fees at any scale. There are fully anonymous transactions via ZeroLink and TumbleBit Smart contracts and instant payment via RSK Near instant and confidential trading between exchanges via Liquid And much more underway now...and this is still just the dawn...not even sidechain gen1...just the sunrise. Bitcoin matters not because it's fast, cheap, or easy; but only because nobody controls it. It grew spontaneously in the wilds of the internet without a central planner. After it, no alt could ever recreate this, as there's no spontaneous market demand for a less secure Bitcoin.

CoinBase stole my money and will no longer reply

tl;dr: Coinbase fucked up, lied to my face, and then stole my money, thinking I wouldn’t notice. They are now mysteriously ignoring my emails. My bank has filed a fraud case. These incompetent, piece of shit, cuntface, lying asswipe morons are to be avoided at all costs. Don’t subsidize the existence of these jerkoffs. Get your crypto elsewhere; there are plenty of options with higher limits and better all-round functionality. So, I transferred 2k GBP from my bank account to Coinbase, and the amount left my bank on January 2nd. According to my bank, Coinbase received the money first thing on January 3rd. But nothing showed up in my Coinbase, and so after waiting around for the suggested 3 days, I sent them an email on the 6th to ask about it. https://i.imgur.com/wdfzeCZ.png So, we’re off to a great start with Sardonica (is this a joke?) suggesting that I wait 3 days and asking for the reference code of my deposit despite the fact that it’s already been more than 3 days and I liter

Day 9: I will post this guide regularly until available solutions like SegWit, order batching, and Lightning payment channels are mass adopted, the mempool is empty once again, and tx fees are low. Have you done your part?

BACKGROUND Segregated Witness (SegWit) was activated on the Bitcoin network August 24 2017 as a soft fork that is backward compatible with previous bitcoin transactions ( Understanding Segregated Witness ). Since that time wallets and exchanges have been slow to deploy SegWit, and the majority of users have not made the switch themselves. On Dec 18 2017 Subhan Nadeem has pointed out that: If every transaction in the Bitcoin network was a SegWit transaction today, blocks would contain up to 8,000 transactions, and the 138,000 unconfirmed transaction backlog would disappear instantly. Transaction fees would be almost non-existent once again . Mass SegWit use alone could empty the mempool, result in blocks that are not completely full, and make it possible to include transactions with $0 fee once again. On Jan 11 2018 when BTC sends went offline at Coinbase the mempool began to rapidly empty. Later in the day when service was restored there was a sharp spike up in the mempool . Subse

PSA: Mempool is clearing. Don't overpay for fees!

Electrum currently suggests ~280sats for 25 block confirmations but you can pay 100sats and have it confirmed in less than a day. To start off, check the estimate in minutes for 100 sats. If it's quick enough for you, multiple by a median transaction size of 226 bytes and that's the fees you should pay. Don't folow the auto suggested fees. If you are using segwit, your total tx size will be even lower, working out to lower fees. Follow the lovely guide to get segwit. Submitted January 20, 2018 at 01:51PM by N-ve http://ift.tt/2Dt1uzy

If your government is so inept, it can't even fund itself.... why keep using their money?

This threat of a government shutdown that those of us in the U.S have to deal with almost every year proves to us that if they're incapable of keeping themselves funded every year, then why do we trust their paper money? On the news there's constant naysayers about how bitcoin is not backed by anything and the Dollar is backed by the "full faith and credit of the U.S. government". Well that "faith" is put in doubt every time our elected leaders use the credibility of our country as a political football to bash eachother over the head with. I myself am choosing to replace my faith with what truly backs bitcoin: the fundamental laws of mathematics. Math doesn't shut down every year, but the U.S. government threatens to do that every so often. How long will that "faith" last in the eyes her people? Listen to Andreas

After discovering Andreas Antonopoulos' youtube channel a couple of months ago, I felt I couldn't get enough. His videos are amazing; his ability to break down the topic of Bitcoin both from a technical aspect and it's potential for the future of the planet is excellent, and I'm sure many will agree he is one of the best speakers on Bitcoin there is. While I could listen to him all day, I can't be spending that much time watching Youtube. Given that Andreas has been kind enough to publish his content under a Creative Commons license, and that nearly all of his talks don't require viewing a screen, I decided to set up a process to extract the audio from his videos to mp3 format so that I can listen as I go about my mundane day-to-day. Having found this to be an awesome way to learn, I thought I might post some of these to the cloud in case anyone else out there finds them useful. [Lightning] The future just arrived at my doorstep!

I used Lightning Network’s mainnet (via lnd) to purchase an AR300M VPN Router through TorGuard, and it’s here! This may have been the first ever physical purchase on LN. I’m just your average BTC enthuasiast, who had a bit of extra time last weekend. I saw TorGuard’s tweet, so I decided to contact them. I enquired as to purchasing more than just a monthly subscription, their staff gave me LN peering information, I opened a channel, received an invoice, and here we are! It was all quick, easy, painless, and most importantly: instantaneous and fee-free!   Proof: https://www.smartbit.com.au/tx/faffc6bebff621f53d6c2d603e0d9c98a133597dff7bed06b2602242fae992d7 ^ the funding transaction for my channel (~$2.40 fee to open). 2018-01-15 10:45:19.087 [DBG] PEER: Received UpdateFufillHTLC(chan_id=d792e9fa422260b206ed7bff7d5933a1989c0d3e602d6c3df521f6bfbec6fffb, id=1, pre_image=5610f4ca5a772b331bd8bfbad73ae3827f33f492fea9e1a6bb189feb88daf66d) from 165.227.171.75:9735 ^ the preimage (recei

My Finance professor just spent an hour and a half teaching about Bitcoin and Blockchain technology

He talked the class through the entire concept, from Satoshi's white paper to the importance of decentralization. He also explained that transaction fees and confirmation times suck right now, but that there are solutions coming very soon that'll (hopefully) fix all of that. He even mentioned that many forks end up failing, "like Bitcoin Gold, Bitcoin Dark, and Bitcoin Cash." Besides that, he also talked about the future of blockchain technology as a whole and how it can help make identities, contracts, etc more efficient and more secure. Overall he did a really good job of explaining what all of it is and why it matters, and cutting through all the FUD of OMG Bitcoin is dying right now RIP . This guy is a professor at a major state university, but he used to work in the traditional finance industry. He has spent most of his life making a living off of fiat, so it was really surprising hearing him talk about how Bitcoin is the way of the future. Submitted Janua

***** WARNING ****** DO NOT SEND ANY (LARGE) SUMS TO COINBASE. $40,000 wire transfer missing since 12/18 with ZERO response

The question is- why would you ever trust this company? How do you not reach out to a customer who trusted you with this amount of money? Is this who you want to be dealing with if/ when the shit really hits the fan in the cryptocurrency space ? It is a total sham(e), I would have absolutely been a customer, and likely an active one long term. For all those who have had positive experiences with Coinbase- that's great, but don't assume it will not happen to you at some point, especially when liquidity goes to hell after a crash. If they can't help a newer customer willing to put in a large amount of funds, why will they help those who put in less. No, I did not deposit this amount without depositing a smaller amount first, which went through, so assumed the systems were fine, and hey worst case the wire is rejected .... WRONG. Don't assume it won't happen to you!! Yes I filed a CFPB and state Financial Institutions complaint. Yes I called a zillion times. Yes I did

[Lightning] I didn't believe it until I saw it

Moderately long post, tl;dr at the bottom. I've seen lightning transaction gifs and videos over and over. Today, I decided to fire up a lightning node on my laptop and give it a shot. I followed this walk-through for mac (I adapted it to Arch Linux) for setting up Bitcoin TestNet Node with Eclair Lightning (it's practically the same as Mac, except for the installation process). Running on Arch caused the problem of accidentally installing the latest dev version of Bitcoin Core ( AUR:bitcoin-git ) - also had some compilation issues because upstream moved some files and this hadn't been updated in the PKGBUILD. The latest dev version of Bitcoin Core included the SegWit address generation by default, which was very nice, didn't have any bugs using it in the brief period I used it. After a couple of hours of syncing the TestNet blocks on my laptop, I started up Eclair and got Eclair and Bitcoin Core connected (had to use bitcoin-qt --deprecatedrpc=addwitnessaddress b

Recently clicked on the top post story over there thinking there had been another big hack or something. But lo and behold they are still obsessing over the Mt. Gox debacle. So I thought I'd test and see if I could prove their bias by posting a recent paper from the Federal Reserve Bank of St. Louis that states "in some ways, Bitcoin is more robust than fiat" and, "crypto assets are posied to become a welcome and important asset class." My husband passed away unexpectedly and I found a USB thumbdrive in our safe. I dont understand bitcoin and could use some help.

I hope this is the right place to get help. My brother in law suggested I try reddit.com for help with trying to recover any amount of money my husband may have used with bitcoin and Google led me to this page. Ive tried my best to figure this out on my own but this bitcoin stuff is confusing and I just get angry and cry. All I want to do is recover any money he may have spent on bitcoin and be done with it. My husband died of a heartattack two weeks ago and he was our family's only source of income while I stayed home with our daughter. He was only 37 so his death was very unexpected. While going through our safe I found a ziplock bag with the word bitcoin written on it and a USB thumbdrive inside. There was also a card with a bunch of words written on it and a 5-digit number. The thumbdrive has a little screen and two buttons on it. When I plug it in my computer doesnt seem to recognize it. It looks like it wants me to enter a password but I cant seem to get past the first dig
