Today is not Bitcoin's birthday!

Happy holiday, everyone! And no, not Halloween. Today is a special day. 10 years have passed since Satoshi released the white paper of Bitcoin. Happy birthday, white paper! Bitcoin's birthday though is on Jan 3, when the genesis block was "mined" back in 2009. On 31 Oct 2008 Bitcoin didn't yet exist. Bitwage - The resistance

Here is a batch transaction of ~14BTC sent out today from BitWage, https://www.blockchain.com/btc/tree/384914557 I like to think of all receivers here as members of the resistance, converting a percentage of their salary to BTC every week/month, real devotees. They are most likely not speculators, since selling isn't allowed on Bitwage, just buying. And you don't have fine control over when to buy either, it happens shortly after your paycheck gets deposited and invoice created. No, these people just like buying bitcoin. They like how it feels to give the middle finger. Sure they're not big institutional investors, but they put their shoulder to the wheel every week buying whatever fraction they can. All those fractions add up. Heave, heave, heave Submitted October 30, 2018 at 01:25AM by bondiblues https://ift.tt/2qpo7Mp

Craig Wright actually did completely original research! Just kidding, I caught him blatantly plagiarizing yet again.

Old plagiarism 1 . Old plagiarism 2 . New plagiarism from this paper . Here are the two uncited sources: source 1 and source 2 . There may be more uncited sources, but I got bored. These two sources cover almost half of the paper. As before, the plagiarism is blatant and intentional. He basically substituted the word 'transaction' for 'infection' and made minimal other textual changes. All the math has been stolen because Craig simply can't do math . Various Examples: Craig's paper Source 1 and (maybe the most obvious -- just click back and forth on these two images) Craig's paper Source 2 and Craig's paper Source 2 Serially taking credit for other people's work. It's the Craig Wright way. Submitted October 30, 2018 at 12:43AM by Contrarian__ https://ift.tt/2Jo4kp7

Why Satoshi Nakamoto deserved a Nobel Prize

Alfred Nobel died with regrets. After making a fortune off of explosives, he indicated in his will that his fortune should be used to make a prize awarded each year to those who “conferred the greatest benefit to humankind.” By all accounts, his namesake award has been a success — winners are curing cancer, ending wars and discovering exotic bosons. Only a handful of humanity has won a Nobel Prize — be it in medicine, physics, chemistry, literature, economics or peace — all of them distinguished for their exceptional work.Yet the 123-year-old institution has grown increasingly moribund, devolving into a system in which a council of predominantly old men dole out their honors to other old men, often remarkable for their work but relatively unknown outside the small circle of their community. As a result, the prize has grown almost entirely insulated inside academia, separate from more widespread advancements being made in the wider world. So in an attempt to reconnect with the public,

Bitcoin is helping in Venezuela in more than one way, Pasta for everyone! Thanks /r/Bitcoin

Hi my name is Victor, I'm from Venezuela and have been into Bitcoin and crypto in general for a while (Sorry english is not my mother language) Since my first post in this sub, where I visited that a local Butcher shop was accepting Bitcoin and Crypto as payment , I received a couple donations to help me, since I didn't feel ok to take the money for me I recruited a couple of my abuelas, and mom and we gave away over 50 arepas . that was an emotional shocker for me. So I wanted to do more, so I quickly got in contact with a couple of people and they put in contact with Father Angel Araujo, he is currently doing (literally(?)) God's work here, contacted with him ask him what he needed and he told me, "We don't need money, we need food", so I quickly hopped into my contact list, called a couple friends and manage to get hold of a 12 pack of 1kg Pasta and since Pasta sucks to be eaten alone (?) I went and bought 10 jars of Sauce, I was trying to get some meat t

Forget about the ETF moment. Mass adoption problem in USA and Canada.

Our vision of mass adoption in which people will freely use crypto for daily purchases will not come to fruition as long as we have to keep track of our capital gains/loss for tax purposes. In Germany as long as you keep your crypto for a year you do not need to keep track of your capital gains. By forcing us to treat Bitcoin as an investment USA and Canada are effectively already fighting progress by Bitcoin. Right now Bitcoin is more like owning a bar of gold or stocks. Too much accounting complications for the average user to use daily. Submitted October 27, 2018 at 08:37PM by AdvocateLLC https://ift.tt/2qfoLvB

Poloniex Forced NDA: TAKE YOUR MONEY OFF POLONIEX

I tried to withdrawal my money 7 months ago. I still have received nothing. For 6 months Poloniex ignored my support requests. They also refused to reply to multiple Better Business Bureau inquiries that I filed. Their compliance officer John Brown (skype sweetjohndee) mostly ignored my messages, occasionally promising me he was "working on it" but refusing to give me any real information. Last month I told Poloniex I'd be filing a complaint with the Massachusetts attorney general if they didn't do the right thing. That got them off their asses, and they finally started replying to my support tickets (still a week+ response time, but better than being completely ignored) John accidentally let slip that basically nothing had been done on this until last month. That alone is criminal. For 6 months they did nothing to send me my property. Only this last month (the 7th month since trying to withdrawal my money) have they been working on it. Or so they claim,

A gentle request for /r/bitcoin members: please upvote more liberally whatever you like or want to make visible on Reddit. It's good for Bitcoin.

Reddit is a hugely important platform for helping pushing BTC into the mainstream and it all depends to you, the /r/bitcoin members and hodlers. One upvote is not much, but nobody knows better than us how small notches can add up to huge results. Make a habit of regularly sifting through posts and upvote the relevant, constructive ones. A large scale bitcoin adoption depends of many factors, but one of them could be you habitual daily click on the posts you like. Yes, you are a hodler and technically cannot do much for the market to grow besides hodling - except this: help keeping Bitcoin on the front page of the front page of the internet. Also, as a side note, the highly upvoted memes pouring at each crypto market downtick are a cancer for the large scale adoption. If you believe in the future of Bitcoin, focus on positives. Thank you, and happy hodling! Submitted October 24, 2018 at 10:52AM by tarandfeathers https://ift.tt/2AprhoQ

Guys this is most excited I've been about Bitcoin in a long time!

So we are hitting that "flat" "boring" horizontal tail BTC always gets after an ATH. And its ... holy sh*t $6K! Not $27 down to $3-7, not $250 down to $50, not $1200 down to $250, but literally we are holding $6K after hitting $20K! Absolutely amazing! Adoption is going up. Interest is worldwide. Money is still pouring into crypto left and right - sure not nearly as much as a year ago but that kind of mania was unsustainable and unhealthy anyway. This is the great HODL time. Buy coins, stash them away. Not many are paying attention. Everyone once again "thinks" they missed the Bitcoin train - just like when it was holding the prices after previous ATHs. Every day we get closer to the next manic buying period where people will bid it up again way over any previous numbers. No one knows when, but I have full faith it will happen again. Bitcoin is sound money the likes of which the world has never seen before. Time will prove that. Good luck everyone, an

This week the bank that I hold my business account with has been closed, had their license suspended etc. Satabank if you wanna check that. This is a bank in the EU. They broke the rules, now I can't pay my suppliers, my salary, insurance or taxes as along with many other customers I have had all services cut off and there's no access to online banking. Those that turned up at the bank this week found locked doors and emails are being replied to with a standard template of how things are out of their hands blah blah. I run a 100% legal, incorporated and tax paying business within the EU and I, along with many more customers have had access to all cash and services cut off. This is modern business is it? Just got my first ever pr0n subscription, paid with Lightning Network.

Screw the stigma. As I was perusing an indiscrete website of my preference I once again contemplated what it would be like to actually pay for porn. Usually its not much of a problem to get off on free porn, but in my particular case I (and my GF) have been into Virtual Reality Porn for a while. And that isn't yet as widespread as you'd think. Not to mention the torrent files for any you can find are hefty (5-10 GB for 45mins). As I was looking at the price for a subscription I noticed they accepted cryptocurrencies and as they were using CoinGate, they also had Lightning Network enabled. Figured that was as good a moment as any to do my first mainnet LN payment. What's the benefit of doing this over LN? Well, I can resub every month without paying any mainchain fee. There's also no bank statements to speak of, and being closely involved with my bank for financing my business projects, I appreciate the privacy. Third, setting up a recurring payment is difficult with

Research Report (Chain Analysis) on Bitcoin Shows Increasing Levels of Adoption

Hey everyone, Recently curated some data from CoinMetrics wrt the overall number of transactions on the protocol, the average fees, and other relevant details. You can find the full link to the research study here: https://blog.zerononcense.com/2018/10/bitcoin-chain-analysis-data-science-pt-1-increasing-of-users-are-gravitating-toward-actual-use-of-bitcoin-vs-trading/ From what I've seen so far (have only compiled the first part of my research study), there has been an 80% increase in the total TX usage on the Bitcoin protocol from May to October, which is very bullish, in my opinion. This has been a steady rate of increase as well and not something that spiked out of nowhere. This, in my opinion, seems to indicate that more and more people are actually using Bitcoin for its intended purpose rather than simply trading around exchanges 24/7. I don't to really delve too deeply into the price here because I know that this Reddit is not for that, but I figured that this would

$3bn 24h trading volume. Who trades so much Bitcoin??

There's something I'm trying to understand. So coinmarketcap says there's 3$bn of bitcoin traded daily. Even if 90% of that is washed - that still leaves $300m that changes hands every day, and that's excluding OTC (which is probably even bigger). My question is - who makes up all this volume? Like what kind of entities? On the selling side I'm guessing it's miners + anyone who gets paid in cryptos they don't want. But on the buying side? Retail investors are completely inactive - and institutional money is not yet in. Market makers and liquidity providers I get - but they must be making the market FOR someone? Who is that someone? Is it some sort of day trader? Attach an imageAttach a fileSend Submitted October 21, 2018 at 09:42PM by xepo3abp https://ift.tt/2S6S2oX

I also noticed that the address I was going to send the Satoshis to an address that already has been used and spent from... which has it downsides. For the price to remain the same, it means people (and institutions) are buying at least more than 12,000 BTC every single week.

I think many institutions are buying quietly before the next rally and before the next halving: http://www.bitcoinblockhalf.com/ This is a great time to accumulate. The upside potential overweighs many times any downside risk. And with the stock market peaking, more money will start flowing into Bitcoin. Why does nobody create an "out of the box" Bitcoin-Node to buy?

The biggest obstacle to running my own bitcoin node would be setting the whole thing up, since im not a very tech savy person. I know, this could be treated as a hobby and is nice way to get your first programming trys. But why does nobody just sell them out of the box? What are the downsides or the risks? Biggest Bank in Nordic Region Bans Bitcoin, Gets Caught for Money Laundering

Nordea Bank, the largest financial group in the Nordic countries, which banned Bitcoin in January, has been caught in a major money laundering scandal for allegedly receiving dirty money from two banks in the Baltics. Yle, a state-owned publication in Finland with over 3,500 employees, reported that finance authorities in Sweden received a report with evidence to support money laundering allegations against Nordea Bank. “We are aware of the report, and at Nordea we work closely with the relevant authorities in the countries in which we... With large institutional participants moving into the bitcoin space (BAKKT, Fidelity) and becoming involved in consensus mechanisms, will their love for KYC have implications for soft-forking new privacy features (Schnorr, MAST, Confidental TX's etc)?

So it seems that "institutional investors" meme is slowly becoming reality now. In the future, they will hold large amounts of customer funds in bitcoin, have their own nodes, media presence and hence a loud voice in the bitcoin ecosystem. They also are subject to KYC and AML. Given that fact, what might be the implications for future implementation of privacy enhancing technology on the bitcoin protocol, such as Schnorr, MAST, Confidental Transactions and others that I'm not aware of at the moment? Will we potentially have a new civil war with parts of the network wanting to have more privacy, and parts of it wanting to keep (or even enhance) the transparency of a public blockchain? How will the implementation processes look like, and will it cause friction when such large players will voice their veto against on-chain privacy? How Prices are Formed - We All Seem to be Confused

I've been perusing the sub lately, and I see people debating about how the price of Bitcoin is generated. People are getting into arguments saying that scarcity generates the price, and others saying that the inherent value of Bitcoin determines its price. This is insane and it needs to be cleared up. If you'd like to learn more, beyond what I write here, check out the millions of free hours of lectures, videos, articles, and books available at Mises.org What I write will be a rather crude representation of very detailed ideas that you can learn more about at Mises.org. 1) Nothing has inherent value. Sorry, inherent value doesn't exist. Humans flush shit down the toilet, while flies swim to it for a buffet (to further prove the point, research "nightsoil"); Drawing modern-day hentai-porn takes just about as much effort as the original painting of Mona Lisa, yet one sells for millions while the other is available for free online; Up until as late as 150 yea

I disagree Bitcoin will stay neutral or go down with this stocks and imminent next bear market and correction. Bitcoin was intended as a the correct response to the last crisis, however, wasn't realized then. It will be this time.

I noticed the community insinuating that it will go down with the stock market because people will be trying to pull their money out of markets and look for safe havens in government issued assets and currencies, like the dollar, treasuries and bonds. This is flawed logic and counter to the exact solution and correct response that Satoshi originated in the last crisis. Bitcoin is a store of non inflationary, non government, digital money and value, that works better than gold, and is extremely powerful because of it's essence. It is a borderless, censorless, immutable, incorruptible, non inflatable measure we can use to evaluate assets distinct from third party interference. It is a power of accurate and true monetary assessment anyone can use. And with community involvement, and cryptographic developments, will become the central means of merchant and consumer exchange. Stocks, treasuries and all assets were and have been inflated by governments, grossly and incessantly, since

Opening a Lightning Network channel is a hedge against the fee market

The fee market can be as volatile as the price based on the demand in the mempool. One way you can ensure you don't have to pay high transaction fees or worry about your transaction being stuck because the fee was too low is to open a LN channel when fees are low. That way if the fee market spikes again, you already have a channel ready to go to make payments with. Submitted October 18, 2018 at 02:24AM by ecurrencyhodler https://ift.tt/2yLIN4Z

Do you speak more than one language? Then help spread Bitcoin around the world by translating Bitcoin.org!

Hello Everyone, My name is Simon AKA Komodorpudel (I know, my name on Reddit is Komodor123, but that is a different story 😊) and I help manage the translation efforts for Bitcoin.org ( https://bitcoin.org/en/ ). Bitcoin.org is by no means Bitcoin’s official website, but it has been one of the most visited Bitcoin websites for quite some time . And a few months ago, in August, Bitcoin.org turned ten years old. When I started to assist with the German translation in 2013, the site was just redesigned, numerous pages were added, additional Bitcoin-software was listed, and the translation system was created. The objective was providing an independent and transparent source of information ; I was happy to help. Back then, Bitcoin was hovering around a one billion USD market cap and MtGox was still a thing (at least for a few more months 😊). A lot of things have changed since then. Bitcoin has matured; exchanges have grown out of nowhere and millions of people have entered the space.

It would be impossible for every Fidelity brokerage customer to own even one Bitcoin. This is why Bitcoins are worth thousands of dollars, while a dollar is only worth one dollar (and only until next year when when it's worth 97 cents). - Erik Voorhees

The $1 dollar backed tether (USDT) is now worth less than 97 cents.

This is about price but of a different thing. People are willing to sell USDT for below $1. They would rather hold "actual real money" TM rather than bitcoins or so called stablecoins. This is telling. If someone wanted to exit USDT why don't they just buy bitcoin or any coin for that matter instead of selling USDT at a loss? https://cryptowat.ch/markets/kraken/usdt/usd/5m Submitted October 15, 2018 at 06:37AM by i_gotta_say https://ift.tt/2OWnPu3

Getting Started with BTCPay Server - Free and Open Source Bitcoin and Lightning Network payment processor

This post is a sequel to my earlier Merchant's Guide and the Ultimate Guide to BTCPay . Since then, the software has matured, it's more feature-rich, light-weight and easier to install with plenty of documentation and video tutorials available. What is BTCPay Server? BTCPay Server is a free and open-source cryptocurrency payment processor which allows you to receive payments in Bitcoin (on-chain and via the Lightning Network) and supported altcoins, directly to your wallet without fees, transaction cost or a middleman via your own full node. Think of it as a non-custodial invoicing system which eliminates the third-party. The private keys are never uploaded to the server. There is no address re-use since each invoice generates a new address deriving from your xpubkey. That means increased privacy, security, and censorship-resistance. It's a tool for self-sovereign businesses, organizations or even individuals. Who can use BTCPay? Merchants with an online or a physic

Why sell and pay capital gains, why not wait for mass adoption? That's my motto.

I own crypto but not Bitcoin.

When I ask friends, colleagues or other people who are into cryptocurrencies if they own Bitcoin, almost all of them respond with "I own crypto but not Bitcoin". Then explaining me why Bitcoin is old and slow and that <insert alt coin> will soon supersede/surpass Bitcoin. As a Bitcoin fanboy (or maximalist), I try to point them on a few facts about Bitcoin and why I think Bitcoin is still king and a better store-of-value than all the others. However, it is hard to convince them and I believe thats because they suffer from, as I call it, the "missing boat effect". They probably feel like they missed the boat on Bitcoin and now just look at the next coin which is cheaper. So they buy all kinds of other coins except Bitcoin and are completely ignoring what makes Bitcoin so strong and great. Does anyone else recognize this? Benefit to Bitcoin hodlers during a stock market crash

"Stomach" is a phenomenal attribute for long-term investing. A common fault in investing behavior is panic-selling during a market downturn, and failing to re-enter before reversion to upturn. It's been shown that staying the course and enduring all market conditions has been a winning investment mindset over the long-term. For many, this is easier said than done. A small portion of my investments are in crypto. After enduring the volatility of the past two years, I find myself comparatively numb to fluctuations in the stock market. I am more confident I can psychologically handle a recession and come out ahead. Submitted October 12, 2018 at 07:02PM by jcav258 https://ift.tt/2pQq3NF

Latin American Exchange Buda.com adds Lightning Network payments for all.

Redditors! I work as an advisor at Buda.com and I have awesome news to share with you. As most of you at /r/Bitcoin probably already know, in addition to being a way to pay Bitcoins with very low fees and practically infinite scalability, the main feature of the Lightning Network is that it is built as a layer on top of the Bitcoin Blockchain, so it provides a decentralized protocol where you don't have to trust intermediaries. Most of LN wallets that are being developed in the world have a strong focus on decentralization, and that’s very good news. As what is sought is that the user does not depend on anyone, these applications generally include a lightning node and a sometimes even a bitcoin node, which allows monitoring transactions on their own. The problem is that this keeps some users out, as installation, configuration and use is still a bit difficult for many. At Buda.com even though we're an exchange, we are also convinced that the future is going towards tota

Guys lets rally and show your support for an BTC ETF! Here's why!

Guys, the first SEC BTC ETF public feedback site had 1,300+ comments from fine folks like yourself . The final one which imo is way more important has just received 90 comments since it came online on Sept 20. :( I understand the mood's changed, but let's finish what we started and get this across the line! Yes, I know people are sick of BTC dumping whenever the SEC rejects/delays a BTC ETF but I think we need to give this a final push! Here are my reasons: 1) Ever heard the term, "so close but so far?" I think the crypto market is on the verge of one of the biggest bullruns in history but we need that final push. The last SEC inviting the public to file public statements on a BTC ETF garnered 1,300+ comments!!! I don't think they've ever received anything like this and since then, the SEC has taken a much softer tone due to the sheer interest in a BTC ETF. 2) Yes, we don't need an ETF and the first one is really only designed for big buyers,
