Must-read Matt Corallo's comment to the SEC, regarding Barry's DCG's BIT and S2X-NYA.

http://ift.tt/2yf7xoc Subject: File No. SR-NYSEArca-2017-06 From: Matt Corallo Sep. 11, 2017 I am Matt Corallo, a long-time developer of Bitcoin (around the 10th publicly recorded individual to contribute to the Bitcoin codebase), an expert on Bitcoin's operation, vocal Bitcoin advocate, and strong proponent of the availability of a Bitcoin Exchange-Traded Product (ETP). I have very grave concerns with the proposed rules for the maintaining of Bitcoin deposits and the lack of consumer protection in the event of Bitcoin Network rule changes in the current filings. As described in the S-1 filing for the "Bitcoin Investment Trust" (BIT), a "permanent fork" of Bitcoin may occur when two groups of users disagree as to the rules which define the system (its "consensus rules"). More specifically, such a "permanent fork" is likely to occur when one group of users wish to make a change to Bitcoin's consensus rules, while another group does n

Why Segwit2x would be a government takeover of bitcoin

Because a small group of corporations subject to full government financial regulations will have taken over the project. This sets a dangerous precedent. It sets the precedent that this well regulated group of corporations now 'control' the bitcoin software with cooperation of a group of miners. Having set this precedent once, governments can then legally compel them to add full AML/KYC, blacklists, and whitelists, to the network. They can no longer claim 'we can't do that' !! If they demonstrate they directly control bitcoin just once, that means they own it forever. It is a bell that cannot be 'unrung'. This is irrefutable and anyone who has read the history of PayPal (which originally intended to be much more like bitcoin) can see it is true. For those who don't know: AML stands for 'anti-money laundering' KYC stands for 'know your customer' Whitelists are pre-approved users of the network who get preferential treatment (co

Let's be honest: ICOs=cancer

This post is in preparation for all the "X country bans ICOs" that are coming in the next days/weeks/months. ICOs are cancer because they are not really serving the purpose of "funding new and innovative projects" they are mostly unnecessary tokens sold by people wanting to enrich themselves fast and bought by mainly: 1) naive people 2) people wanting to make a quick buck from naive people Long term, it is good for Bitcoin to reduce the absurd dilution of the "digital value token" space that ICOs bring to the table without providing anything really innovative or worthwhile. Now, you're free to upvote/downvote according to your ICO token holdings at this moment in time. /rant Submitted September 29, 2017 at 08:48AM by bitcoinexperto http://ift.tt/2hAwByV

An open letter to Erik Voorhees

Dear Erik I am writing to you because I think you value user financial sovereignty and therefore I do have some hope, I think you can be persuaded to change your mind and support user sovereignty. I kindly ask that you leave the NYA, and support an alternative hardfork proposal that, respects the rights of users to choose. Bitcoin is fundamentally a user currency, individual users are sovereign and free to decide to opt-in to Bitcoin. Governments, businesses, miners or developers cannot impose changes on Bitcoin users. Ultimately users are the final decision makers when it comes to hardforks. Individual users are able to verify all the rules and reject coins that do not comply. This is what provides the financial sovereignty. If users do not do or cannot do this, financial sovereignty is lost and Bitcoin then has no unique or interesting characteristics compared to the US Dollar. It is naive to think that if individual users do not verify and enforce the rules, that one day a govern

*Must read for newcomers* My friend worked in the Bitcoin industry (broker) for a couple of years and has been involved in the crypto world since 2014. This is what he had to say about the recent politics of btc when someone asked him on our crypto trading channel

Those that wanted to scale using bigger blocksize (short term solution that doesn't work long term and also causes more centralization) vs those who wanted to scale using changes in the code to make the network more efficient aka SEGWIT+second layer scaling solutions (bitcoin becomes massive settlement layer, and second layer solutions can take care of verifying your $3.25 coffee payment). On the big block side you had (most) miners because they were only able to see the short term benefits of increased blocksize and they do not care about network centralization. Also, a chinese miner controlling a sizeable chunk of the network's hashrate had access to (and was in the process of patenting) this technology called ASICBOOST which is an exploit in bitcoin code that a

It is time to call off NYA/segwit2x and work together to scale Bitcoin to compete against Fiat. Please.

The NYA/segwit2x proposal has a number of technical issues and pretty big due care problems, but I consider the biggest issue the circumstances and thinking - to me it's surprising that a few company folks don't see that meeting in a hotel room to impose a change on Bitcoin would be controversial to users and the ecosystem - bitcoin is a user currency, and the properties that brought all of us as users and entrepreneurs to Bitcoin and that give it value inherently rely on user and ecosystem agreement and decentralised process in Bitcoin. Imagine Bitcoin had been started by a startup with a CEO and some VC funding. It would have been killed with prejudice in 2010 or whenever the first geo-politically interesting test came. On the eve of the various China bitcoin news problems our Chinese bitcoiner friends are working through - I would think the reason why pivoting change discussion away from an open ecosystem discussion to a few companies is a problem would become very appare

If you don't want to lose bitcoin before the price goes up, you just buy more bitcoin before or after you purchase something with bitcoin. Or sell your house for buying more bitcoin. The real value of bitcoin depends on how many transactions that purchase with bitcoin. If nobody purchases anything with bitcoin, bitcoin will become worthless. Hodling or storing bitcoin never help the community anyway. We have to promote trading bitcoin and purchasing with bitcoin. I recommend purchasing with bitcoin at the store that discount when we paying with bitcoin. That's helping the store, help the community, and help the buyer at the same time. Stop the FUD: Bitcoin is BOTH a Store of Value and a censorship resistant System of Payments

This arguing back and forth between prominent Bitcoiners of whether Bitcoin is a System of Payments or a Store of Value is a False Dichotomy. For example. Here is Tone Vays saying Amazon shouldn't add Bitcoin because the "people at Amazon are also smart enough to know that Bitcoin is not ready for this technology till lightning." Tone Vays is just speaking pure BS here. Bitcoin can be, and has been used as a system of payments since the Silk Road and the selling of Alpaca socks. Had it not been for the dark net markets and retailers such as Overstock accepting Bitcoin, it's doubtful Bitcoin would have the value it has today. Bitcoin is worth sending as value because people accept it as payment for many things. And many people accept it as payment because it has value that is independent of the monetary policies that control FIAT money. It really is silly to see so many Bitcoin developers, users, and other argue about this night and day. Bitcoin is BOTH. These tw

after years of talking about bitcoin, i am finally overhearing people at work talking about bitcoin.. its feel so strange.. what is funny is listening to my co-workers talk about the same thing i was trying to tell them years ago.. it's like they are trying to convince me what bitcoin is all about.. my family & friends have yet to ask me about bitcoin.. in 5 years.. no one is going to believe i have 1 whole bitcoin.. let alone more then 1.. maybe it's time i start trying to blend in with them.. Someone is going to become a millionaire by making a "Bitcoin browser." (A "Tim-Berners Lee" moment.)

We're going to see a “Tim Berners-Lee moment” soon that completely demystifies Bitcoin for the mainstream user in the same way Tim demystified internet access by inventing the browser. Whoever does this is going to make a blind fortune. At the moment, the public is extremely confused by Bitcoin. “Is it a real coin as well as digital? What is a blockchain? What on earth is an eWallet? How to I change my $ into Bitcoin? It is also incredibly convoluted to use. What's desperately needed is an app that's as simple and easy to use as a browser , then Bitcoin will go mainstream with explosive speed. The bottom line is that users simply don’t need to know what a blockchain is, what eWallets and paper Wallets are and how they work. Truth is there's no money in the eWallet, it's all in the Blockchain so the ‘wallet’ term is stupidly confusing. Nor do they need to know about private and public keys either. Big time article in Wall Street journal today.

WSJ has a glowing interview/article with Balaji Srinivasan about the future of Bitcoin. Nothing about a bubble, nothing about frauds or scams. This is a tacit endorsement by the best financial paper in the world. The paper describes bitcoin and the blockchain in general as the "internet of money" and describes how it is revolutionizing everything in finance. It goes on to describe how China is trying to manipulate bitcoin in order to facilitate their own currency tied to the renminbi, or to capture bitcoin for themselves. WSJ explains how china created the great firewall shortly after the internet was invented, and now they're trying to do the same with blockchains and crypto... China isn't banning bitcoin. They plan on regulating it themselves. This is the most positive sign I have seen around bitcoin in a long time. Wall Street journal putting out a positive article about BTC is a huge progress. Folks, forget about the price and Dimon etc, let's focus on fully neutralizing the 2x attack.

If only bitjihad run their 2x nodes there should be no problem, but it's SUPER important right now to reach out to every non reddit / twitter using btc user and make him secure his coins. Theres popular wallets like Breadwallet which are fully open to attack afaik, let's get this sorted and then we can have fun while Jamie asks for another bailout in the upcoming fiat shitshow. Might also be important to keep a call to arms ready on old miners if hashrate looks dicy. This is the djstributed responsibility that BTC is about and it's time to get busy doing what it takes to go to the moon. Cheers ! AMA request: Anyone who's bought/sold Tether directly from Tether since late April.

With all the China drama I feel like this issue has fallen off the radar a bit, but it occured to me today that I've not actually seen any reports by people who said they'd bought Tether directly. There's statements from Tether/Bitfinex employees who say that they are processing wires for some corporate clients, as well as comments like this one claiming that they have more money coming in every day than going out, but I've tried and failed to find any recent examples of users who say they've either bought or sold Tether directly to/from Tether (as opposed to on Kraken etc). Given that $120 million in new Tethers were issued in less than two weeks recently, I'm surprised that I couldn't locate any confirmation of anyone actually buying USDT from the issuer. Is anyone here aware of any users here or elsewhere (I've searched reddit and on bitcointalk) who have bought Tether directly recently? Submitted September 21, 2017 at 01:40AM by SpeedflyChris

Bitcoin and Ordinary People: This Is Gonna Be Hard Work

My father is a retired high school economics teacher. He has previously sort of gently made fun of Bitcoin, but I have to admit in a reasonably sophisticated way. He said it would only work if people started exchanging "real money" for it at exchanges... Well... here we are then. So at last tonight we had a LONG chat about Bitcoin and how it actually functions as a system. No the economics, the technology. I managed to get him on board with the blockchain, with mining, with the halvening, with how there will only be 21 million (well, actually only not-quite-21-million), etc etc. He is definitely the oldest person I know, at 71, who has not just gone "pffft what a load of crap." Reassured by external data - the current price - he now understands that it is real and it can work. He accepts that the design is self-consistent and that it has features that allow it to function as money. Now all I had to do was explain the details. I took him through Satoshi, the ge

I'm sending informative letters to atleast 100 shops and bars in my area about Bitcoin.

So I was going to the pub the other day and was talking about Bitcoin (once again) to my friends, who still do not own any of the cryptocurrencies. I was jokingly asking the bartender if I could pay my beers with Bitcoin. He answered me that he would take 1 BTC for my order (3 beers) and I replied back “Any idea how much 1 BTC is worth right now?” He said: “Yeah about 1000 EUR or something?”. At that time it was worth 4000 EUR. So I explained him how and why it is getting so much attention, why it is at 4000 EUR and not 1000 EUR anymore, why it's so easy to use and he was really impressed and interested. I feel like this conversation gave me a boost to promote cryptocurrencies in general to other people. So I’ll be sending a letter to all the local bars, restaurants, coffee shops, barbers, candy shops, butchers and bakeries etc to let them know about Bitcoin. What it is, what it is going to be in the future, how you can get it and how to spend it, etc... Any suggestions I shoul

Why so many of us are saying the China ban is 'good news'

A lot of people don't understand why many of us are saying the China ban is 'good news'. You need to understand one thing. This was 100% guaranteed to happen! Most of us are entirely shocked that China ever let things get as far as they did; but we are hardly shocked that it has happened now. When bitcoin is tiny, it is not perceived as a significant threat. As it grows ever larger, it becomes a larger and larger threat to the powers that be. As bitcoin continues to grow, it will begin to threaten entire national currencies. You don't think there will be a backlash? There will be. It will threaten numerous multi-trillion dollar businesses, they will (and already are) fighting back. This is a war people. If you didn't realize that getting into it, well you didn't understand exactly what we are trying to do. The China ban was inevitable. However, there are consequences, most of them pretty damned positive. Many people in the bitcoin community lost the plo

how realistic is hyperbitoinization?

How realistic is hyperbitcoinization (a tipping point where people start a rush to exit fiat for bitcoin in a fiat devaluation event http://ift.tt/1mLj7dy ). Let's look at some global monetary and gold statistics. Some talk about bitcoin perhaps one day matching or passing gold market cap. http://ift.tt/2wDERQo at $4400 which Bitcoin has been above for some of this month, it already reached around 1% of gold market cap. But what other global targets are there for comparison. Globally, all paper currency and coins are valued around $5 trillion - at $4400 Bitcoin was already 1.5% of that. Paper currency plus bank balances and savings value around $90 trillion - so if Bitcoin got to $50k/BTC (10x recent bitcoin highs) bitcoin would be valued 1% of all money! So where is the tipping point - where people sit up and take notice - I'm not sure, but 1.5% of all physical currency is already pretty interesting. What happens if/when Bitcoin gets to 10%? Which then gets within reach

Erik Voorhees blocked me on Twitter, for correctly pointing out he has not honored his commitment (in writing), to ensure all hardforks are safe by adding replay protection

Erik Voorhees signed the following statement: Some exchanges intend to list BTU and all of us will try to take steps to preserve and enable access to customers' BTU. However, none of the undersigned can list BTU unless we can run both chains independently without incident. Consequently, we insist that the Bitcoin Unlimited community ( or any other consensus breaking implementation ) build in strong two-way replay protection. Failure to do so will impede our ability to preserve BTU for customers and will either delay or outright preclude the listing of BTU. Source: http://ift.tt/2nwalb8 After committing to this key safety feature, of strong to way replay protection, he has now backed out of the agreement. Erik now supports 2x, which does not include strong replay two-way replay protection. Erik then tried to twist the meaning of words saying 2x was not "consensus breaking", since it has consensus. This is clearly not what the commitment means, it uses the words conse

Tried to login into my mobile app one day last week, and found that my account was "locked." Hmm that's weird. China isn't at "war" with crypto. They're trying to make it work for them.

Anti-Chinese memes are fun and all, but I wanted to give you guys a clearer picture about what's happening in China right now. China has a history of trying to legislate around free-market economies in a way that doesn't impede the market but still works for them. When Hong Kong was ceded back to China in 1999, China made Hong Kong a separate economic zone , thus allaying fears that China would kill one of the world's most important market economies. This is exactly what's happening in China right now. the PRC is trying to make Bitcoin work within the Chinese economy. They are NOT trying to kill a thriving economic market. Exhibit A: China isn't shutting down exchanges, they're forcing them to get licensed. That means all exchanges will have to conform to stricter guidelines about accounting and tracking, which might not please the crypto-anarchists but does mean a lesser likelihood of a Chinese Mt Gox event. What we're seeing right now is a transition

CryptoCompare shows that Japan accounts for over 50% of all bitcoin trades. Chinese traders have already moved to Japan. China less than 7%.

don't sell more bitcoin than you can afford to lose. some thoughts on HODLing strategy.

Do not sell all of your bitcoin holdings on what you speculate is a local peak, because you don't know when the local peak is, macro you are operating on your long term thesis that bitcoin is digital gold and long term target is much higher. Selling all at what you guess is a local peak, can go against you - then you end up holding no bitcoin because you sold it all, and price doubles, never to return. This is what people are talking about when they say they learned the hard way. Then you are no longer a bitcoin holder or you buy back at a higher price and have 5x instead of 10x. Generally day trading a slow exponential random function with high volatility is high risk - statistically you will lose. If you want to guess news-flow do it with a small part like < 10% so you still have 90%+ in long term holdings that you do not touch, in years, if you guess wrong! Anyone who has day-traded regular stocks will tell you news-flow is hazardous, even when you get the news that you bet

He makes it sound like the thought of her making a good investment decision is ridiculous. If you watch the video, he even gets the crowd to chuckle.
