After 1 year of use, today I discovered Localbitcoins.com is broken

I need 1000 GBP for crack and whores this weekend, so I load up Localbitcoins.com and browse the buyers. Great! I find a guy that can do cash deposits to UK banks, and his rate is 6849 GBP / BTC (about 5% better than spot price!) I'm not one to ask questions, so I jump in and initiate the trade. After 4mins I get a msg - It turns out he "forgot to change" his price. Chat thread here: https://imgur.com/Ri2zeVG Ahh, well you know what they say, if it's too good to be true... But whatever, he cancels the trade, and I give him neutral feedback. Harsh? Well... You can set up auto pricing on Localbitcoins.com so there is no excuse for forgetting to change the price. Having the best rate puts you at the top of the search results = more trades. He immediately offered a lower price. This makes me think he was doing this on purpose to bait in trade offers, then negotiate a lower more realistic price. He had 98% rating - 249 positive

Saw that. Is Bitcoin a new luxury brand now?

Bitcoin Mining for Water Desalinization

Hello, everybody! I'm currently working on using the waste heat from Bitcoin mining to desalinate water for potable use or irrigation. The goal is to increase the profit potential of mining by reducing waste. This project is based upon some previous work I did harnessing mining waste heat to keep a tub hot and my apartment comfy during the winter. Here is an article on my project by Vice. Going forward I plan on assembling a prototype, collecting some "dirty" water, and having pre- and post-process analysis done by a lab on the water samples to determine the viability of the project. I'm looking for someone who might be interested in bankrolling my research. Currently I'm operating out of a small apartment with limited funding. Thanks for reading! Why I Believe in Bitcoin

When I made the decision to invest in bitcoin, it was for a long-term investment. I feel bitcoin is going to rise in price significantly in the next 5-10 years. I also feel that it is a good store of value at the price I paid for my bitcoin. I have faith in the bitcoin network and I see bitcoin as the gold standard among cryotocurrency. I was around during the early days of the internet. Connecting to local bulletin boards (or pay long distance to connect to exotic far away boards) via dial up 2400baud modem. I had a free unlimited America Online account for being a Beta tester and remember telling older family members that websites would replace 1-800 numbers on the bottom of the screen at the end of commercials and the general response I got was "Oh, that's just for computer nerds" and widespread adoption would never happen. They started to believe me a little when I broke the news of Princess Diana dying from AOL Headlines. I ran out and told my family about what

Thank you to whoever donated ~14 BTC to Bitcoin.org yesterday. We will use all of that money to continue to educate millions of people worldwide about Bitcoin. No other donation in this space will make as much of an impact as supporting the site that started it all.

Why Bitcoin was created

NOTE: Not sure if this is useful at all. I welcome corrections. This was off the top of my head, probably a lot of stuff can be made clearer. I see many people here are not really understanding why bitcoin was created. As a result, many are unable to answer these questions: Why bitcoin over another crypo-currency? If bitcoin is slower than CC why use it? [your-question-here]? If you can answer "Why was Bitcoin created?" you will automatically form your own opinion on the questions above! Wrong Question The original question we asked is kind of the wrong question to ask. It has a simple (unsatisfying) answer: Question : Why was Bitcoin created? Answer: To prevent spending the same digital dollar twice. Wait.. what? Before we understand above, let's first understand the problem with digital money... Money: physical vs. digital Physical money is easy. Let's say we decide to use apples as currency. If I have one apple and you have one apple,

Got Bitcoin? "Citibank, UBS, JP Morgan, Barclays and RBS sued for rigging currency exchange rates".

Venezuela UPDATE. 1 BTC is 49,000,000 Bs. Last week it was 47,000,000 Bs. Monthly minimum wage is around 11 USD. 874 BTC were traded last week (down from 1,185)

3,127 BTC were have been traded this month only using LocalBitcoin, everyone knows about the fees, but for some reason people still traded that amount in this country using BTC and Localbitcoin. Last week was the lowest trading week since Nov 2018 (I dont really know the reason). That doesnt sounds a lot, but considering the wages here are under 20 USD usually I think it means a lot. Even when when people use BTC to save (just to avoid Bs.) Usually it is BTC > Bolivares in your bank account By the way, before someone asks. This is the famous speech in june 2022 by u/binarygold

When you're buying Bitcoin, you're not just buying a random speculative asset to make a quick buck. What you're buying is much bigger and much more valuable than any other asset available. It's not about gains, or even store of value. In fact, this will sound insane to the uninitiated, but what you're buying is more precious than anything else in the world. You're buying freedom for yourself and others. You're buying freedom from tyrannical governments, freedom from wars paid by devalued currencies, freedom of opinion and expression, freedom to freely trade with other free humans. When you buy Bitcoin, you're directly supporting an asset that underlies a philosophical and political movement focused on the idea of liberty and pursuit of happiness, the great ideals of the United States and the free world in general, which are in danger of being completely corrupted. Every time you spend a dollar on Bitcoin, you make Bitcoin stronger, and make it live an

Happy Bitcoin Pizza Day!

The transaction that spawned Bitcoin Pizza Day will go down in history! For every year that passes, the value of crypto, in general, has increased. This proves time and time again that it is not the market that progresses the tech, but the individuals supporting it. The community is a powerful force that drives the progression of blockchain into the future. The purchase of 2 large pizzas was the first documented use case of crypto to be exchanged with a merchant. From there, its utilization has substantially increased ! Now governments and large entities, like banks, are researching and implementing blockchain into their systems. Though this may not be the preferred usage for everyone, it is proving that the tech is highly valuable and is incredibly disruptive . All and all, we must give a hats off and a round of applause to the two men who made a small interaction a monumental occasion that we can all celebrate together! Happy Bitcoin Pizza Day to everyon

As like many of the Bitcoin dev's this guy has definitely secured his place in crypto legacy. Not only is he officially the longest serving core lead maintainer, he does so with dignity and an amazing work ethic. He keeps his head down, avoids much of the politics and just works away on the code. If you drop in to the github at any point your almost guaranteed to see him coding away. He's not one for the limelight but think it always nice to acknowledge his and the other devs efforts. Petition to remove Craig Wright's name from Bitcoin Whitepaper's copyright

https://www.change.org/p/karyn-temple-remove-craig-wright-s-name-from-bitcoin-whitepaper-copyright On 31st October 2008, the bitcoin whitepaper was released by the creator of bitcoin under the pseudonym Satoshi Nakamoto. The real identity of Satoshi Nakamoto has been a mystery for a decade, many suspects have come up, but no one is sure. Amidst all this confusion, Craig Wright, a known fraud has forged many documents, including submitting a fake email in a billion dollar lawsuit, has claimed the throne of Satoshi Nakamoto, and when confronted with proof of the claim, has always only given forged documents. A few days ago he crossed the line by filing a copyright for the bitcoin whitepaper, considered sacred for many, this has caused many gullible people to invest in the so called "real bitcoin", Bitcoin SV, by making Craig Wright, the creator of Bitcoin SV look like Satoshi. With the recent filing of copyright by CSW I figured I would share information I found in case any or all of us) would like to file a copyright on the Bitcoin Whitepaper. Some people have already made mention of doing this so figured I would provide some information on doing so. The Copyright administration does NOT verify/validate the Copyright forms submitted to them which is exactly why Craig did this and also why anyone else can also. This Copyright doesn't affect anything with Bitcoin however it does add CSW in the history books(albeit wrong) as being Satoshi. I would rather see the history books showing hundreds of thousands if not more people also in the history book as being Satoshi which is really what Bitcoin is about. The Copyright administration doesn't take any legal actions against Copyright infringement so it would be up to CSW to to dispute anyone else that also files for the same Copyright on the Bitcoin Whitepaper. Filing for a Copyright electronically doe

The Lighting Network Will Make Bitcoin A Cash Flow Asset

I don't think many have really realized that the Lightning Network essentially gives anyone the chance to lend liquidity to the network and gain a return from doing so. The lighting network is basically a free market of lenders and users. The more is scales, the more liquidity is needed and the more volume lenders will gain, which gives them passive income on their Bitcoin. The higher the volume of the network the more return people will make on Bitcoin, which drives competition and should keep fees low. Just something to think about for the future and the value proposition. Submitted May 21, 2019 at 09:01PM by Trident1000 http://bit.ly/2Jw66aE

Hodlers of last resort are insane

I am a hodler of last resort. I was recently perusing Bitcoin Twitter and Reddit when I read something that made me think about how crazy myself and others like me are. I ran across a comment that said something like "How crazy are you to cheer when your investment goes down simply because you'll be able to buy more of it" That got me thinking because what rational investor holds a declining asset and is happy about it because they will be able to buy more for cheaper prices? No one! Literally no one besides us. A rational investor would set a stop loss for say 10% and then reevaluate after the drop to see if he wants to buy back in. Bitcoin hodlers of last resort don't sell. The hodlers are what helps Bitcoin hold its value throughout the bear markets. Imagine if everyone holding bitcoin last November sold as soon as we fell below 6k, the price would have dropped to $100 easy. What happened though? We dropped to 3k and then the hodlers started soaking up supply b

Pizza Guy needs some love!!

Hey guys and girls, I just want to give a shout out to the Pizza Guy. I've seen a lot of posts lately poking fun at him so I want to address just how important this man is to Bitcoin. When Bitcoin started no one knew what it was capable of. It's hard to believe that people weren't even sure if it was worth ANYTHING. Keeping in mind people were speculating and at the time 10k BTC was trading for ~$41. Pizza Guy changed all this! Single handedly this man created the first real world value use case for Bitcoin. This Pizza represents so much more than just 10,000BTC for a pizza. Bitcoin went from nerdy digital tokens to "money" with that purchase. For the first time Bitcoin could be used to purchase real world items! So I just want to say thank you Pizza Guy for growing the ecosystem, for creating the first real world transaction for Bitcoin, and helping to bring BTC to the mainstream! Thank you! Smell Something Fishy? The CFTC Will Pay You to Report Crypto Scams... and I have a very special scammy website in mind

No need to be an insider or anything, and if they end up fining the scam more than $1m, you could get 10% - 30%. More details here . Now there's this one website that is creating a lot of confusion and misleading noobs to buy a shitcoin as if it were bitcoin. Do I really need to spell it out? I call that a scam.   And before anyone starts telling me how getting gov involved is "OMG, so cypherpunk!!", spare me the cries of self righteousness. If you insist in playing clean with an opponent playing dirty, boxing an opponent with a gun, you'll get rekt big time. And the people behind that scam website are playing dirty as it gets. The responses to these questions can be forwarded to an email in the bottom of the text itself. The start of the questions directed at us is on page 4. I'm not normally the activist type, but hope to point to this after reading the fine print in hopes one of the mods will take this on themselves to make this more pressing for the community at large so that we can all collectively respond to these questions and get this to congress together. A link from Jake Chervinsky's twitter to the document: https://twitter.com/jchervinsky/status/1130547923211739138 The document itself: https://www.sec.gov/rules/sro/cboebzx/2019/34-85896.pdf Edit: maybe we could formulate answers as a community? Standing up for your belief in the future.

Last year close to when bitcoin was near its bottom, after the crash, I was sitting in my Economics class when my professor discussing certain topics brought up bitcoin and asked if anyone still thought “bitcoin was going anywhere.” I was the only student who raised my hand, and voiced my trust in bitcoin and cryptocurrency and their long term affect on the world as currency. He laughed at me, said something about it never having stable value and moved on. Even though this jump in price doesn’t mean much to me, I know that bitcoin has and will have a large impact. The world is going to change right before my economics professors eyes. Submitted May 21, 2019 at 07:46AM by Kappa996 http://bit.ly/2VCHvCw

I Thought the 60 Minutes Piece was Better than Expected

So leading up to the 60 Minutes piece about Bitcoin it seemed some people thought it was going to be a hit piece about how terrible Bitcoin is, and some people seemed to expect a glowing 60 minute long commercial telling people to buy Bitcoin. I watched it last night, I'll drop a link to where you can watch it if you missed it or don't have cable, its 60 Minutes site. I found it to be very basic, but pretty balanced. There was not a single mention of Tulips or Beanibabies. There was little to no mention or Darknets or buying drugs aside from Charlie Schrem making a brief mention of why he went to prison ie selling BTC to someone who was reselling on Silk Road. Overall the piece was very basic. I heard some people say this could have been made back in 2014 which was very true as they didn't really talk about or mention any of the more recent developments like Bitcoin futures, like potential ETF's or Bakt futures or companies like Fidelity and others getting invovled.

For all the newcomers. Please stop asking if Bitcoin will keep rising.

Not a single one of us knows if bitcoins price will rise or fall. The answer is that it will either rise or fall or stay the same. If you believe in Bitcoin then put your spare money on it and hodl. Submitted May 20, 2019 at 08:04PM by AcidNipps http://bit.ly/30AuSMf

Put in my final position at $7300 - Anxiety RELIEVED

*Not financial advice, more related to mental health* I am just posting this in case anyone reading here is in the same boat. I'd been flubbing since 5k waiting for a re-trace. then by the time I woke up my buy order at $6400 wasn't met by the flash crash on my exchange and I woke up with BTC at $7300 basically. What was scary for me is how quickly and surely all the BTC got ate up under $7k. So, I decided to bite and put in my last "large" position on BTC. (Large for someone who makes $15.50 an hour) Now, even if there is a 50% retrace, I just feel so much better. I can always buy more. I'm only at 50% of what my "True goal" was but it's enough BTC to get me by. I'm not quite a 21 million club member. But my anxiety I've been carrying since April is just GONE. The real lesson though, and where my mind went, was that waiting for a retrace in a bull leaning scenario is scary. I missed $2k worth of buys. We may see those prices again but e

My tiny little camera store now accepts Bitcoin payments!

Hi all, I've been flirting with BTC and crypto on and off since 2012 with experience in mining, buying, selling and even losing crypto. Something I've never done before is used BTC for its intended use: commerce & payments. I'm delighted to share that now, through my tiny little camera building shop Solarcan I am now set up to accept Bitcoin payments. This was incredibly easy to set up. I used Coinbase Commerce linked with my website and all in all it took about 30 minutes to set up. We should all be accepting Bitcoin payment in our respective industries if we truly believe in what Bitcoin can become. It's not just about hodling - spedning is probably more important. Really pleased to be able to announce this to you guys, as most of my peers are still getting to grips with it all. *this is not intended as an advert, however if you wish to support me, I'd be very grateful. I tried it. Bitcoin works at the Amazon from the Moon.

I haven't set up my own lightning node (LN) yet but I do have the Eclair wallet on my phone. The initial channel I opened to the ACINQ node failed to route my payment but the subsequent channel I opened directly to Moon's own LN did work. Moon has done a great job of integrating their plugin to Amazon's checkout workflow. It feels native to the website as if the Amazon folks did it themselves. Bravo, u/binarytree . Looking at my order details afterwards, I see that my account's credit card is listed as the means of payment even though it wasn't charged. I also see in the order invoice a gift card alongside my credit card which covered the entire cost of the order. So, that's what Moon is doing behind the scenes when I paid with Lightning BTC. I was told if I refund the order, the money I spent waits for me as a credit on my Amazon account for later shopping. I was prompted to create a login account with Moon when I installed their plugin. The plugin didn

PSA: ALWAYS double check your URLs. Just got phished big time.

I've been using BTC for a relatively long time. I've always had a healthy paranoia about scams, phishing, etc. Except for today. For all those countless times I've tried to save a few dollars on transaction fees, cared about 10 or 20 dollars timing a sale, or just trying to be frugal IRL, and well it all just got washed away. Be careful, there are MANY brilliant scammers out there trying to take your coins. I typed in the URL of a mixer I've used many times, except for some reason today I just typed in .io instead of .com. deposited about .8 BTC... Confirmation after confirmation and nothing happened. Then I realized, my time had come, I just got phished for $5,500. Just like that. If you've ever been robbed before you know the sinking feeling. It's awful. My head continues to spin and I hope somehow some way I can get over it soon. Don't let it happen to you. Always double, triple check your URLs. You have to keep a healthy paranoia when it comes to this

Pragmatic Lightning - Build a Lightning app in 1 hour.

https://mvanderh.github.io/pragmatic-lightning/ Hi fellow Bitcoiners, I've written a guide to help you build a Lightning Network app with minimal time and effort. I found other guides to be too in-depth and complex for getting an app off the ground quickly, so I tried to simplify the process as much as possible and distilled it into this guide. It shouldn't take you more than an hour. Please take a look if you have an idea for a Lightning micropayments app that you want to build, or if you're just curious how to build on Lightning, or just for fun. Any criticisms and/or comments would be much appreciated. Cheers! A reminder to take care of yourself

As fun and exciting bitcoin can be I know I have found myself obsessively researching and reading about it sometimes for 6 hours a day. But I think we should remember to give ourselves some time to relax and to forget about the markets and about money. Our brains need space to recuperate and relax. Remember when you were young, playing outside and you were fully in the present moment. You weren't thinking about things constantly, grasping and clinging to mental concepts and thoughts, you didnt derive your reality from mental projections of how you think the future should be, you were free from those concepts, so the present moment was all there was. I think we can find relief in the present moment. The markets are so future oriented but if we live our lives only thinking about the future, living through a construct in our minds, our imagination of the future, we really miss what is already here. If we can't appreciate and enjoy the present moment right now, we probably neve

A HODLer's dilemma - There are likely much fewer Bitcoin millionaires than you think

I first learned about bitcoin through a newsletter reporting a Mt Gox hack in 2011. After reading about its potential to be seriously disruptive, I still avoided making any purchases due to the limited (and shady) means of acquiring any. But I kept my eye on it. I saw the small pattern of boom-bust cycles but there were too few at the time to consider this pattern to be normal. I bought my first bitcoins in April 2013. I'd FOMO'ed the runup from $15 to $100 and finally bought in at $138. One of the only ways to buy bitcoin at the time was to deposit cash into some rando's bank account and cross your fingers that they'd actually send you bitcoin in return. I was lucky. They did. Bitcoin continued to rally to $230. I'd nearly doubled my money in a few days. I finally applied for a Mt Gox account and was hooked. It only took 3 more months to watch my initial investment be cut in half after the retrace to $66. My point here is it took balls to inves

Blockspace competition just eliminated Veriblock Spam!

https://explore.veriblock.org/network-stats For the past 18 months, veriblock has been accounting for 20-30% of the blockspace. This was made apparent when they transitioned to their mainnet in March, and Bitcoin transactions dropped by 25% temporarily. Compare their current network to the testnet screenshot in this article https://medium.com/@bluenodecapital/the-veriblock-proof-of-proof-protocol-4fad8d60e2d4 Due to the rise in transaction volume and the rising fee market, Veriblock can no longer afford to spam the block chain! Their Network stats show a paltry 0.3% block chain usage in the past day, and a plummeting hashrate on their own network, since miners can't afford to trade Bitcoin for the worthless Veriblock tokens anymore. This may signal the demise of Veriblock. The block size limit in action! Preventing bloating, spam, and incentivizing miners. Submitted May 16, 2019 at 09:47PM by Red_Bagpipes http://bit.ly/2JJUQXs

This has been my entire goal up until this present time. That is all. Submitted May 16, 2019 at 09:32AM by Gone_rogue_crypto http://bit.ly/2HuQkJB

STOP USING BLOCKCHAIN.COM they are using up unessesary space on the bitcoin blockchain and making YOU PAY FOR IT!!!

The founder of blockchain.com recently bragged about how their users made up 22% of transactions for bitcoin in the last 24h: https://twitter.com/OneMorePeter/status/1128392025466974210?s=20 Their service is deliberately choosing to make transactions larger then they have to by not using segwit. When they dont use segwit the transactions take up more space, which in turn requires you to pay more in fees and everyone else has to pay more because less transactions fit on the chain. Switch to a wallet thats makes use of segwit today! Blockstreem green Samurai wallet BRD wallet (make sure to activate segwit in settings) Electrum BTC.com And many more You know you are using segwit if your btc adress starts with a "3" or "bc1" Lets make bitcoin acale together and dump companies that dont care about bitcoin! PSA: When the mempool is full & tx fees are spiking make sure to use & support wallets which have Segwit & Bech32 enabled.

We're clearly seeing 50% of the network choosing to pay more in fees by sticking to legacy addresses and services that don't support Segwit & Bech32. Some evidence: https://twitter.com/OneMorePeter/status/1128392025466974210 This is their option and right. But if you do support the scaling attempt through these upgrades then we should be advocating for the businesses that have them enabled. Is there a list or resource available to share for wallets, services, and exchanges who have upgraded and those who have not. I know that Hodl Wallet. ( https://hodlwallet.com/ ) defaults to Bech32. What are some others? Submitted May 15, 2019 at 07:02PM by 01011110111111000111 http://bit.ly/2HvRWTh

Bitcoin is the best score-keeping system on the planet

That is why it has value. Humans can't live together in harmony without a fair score-keeping system. Bitcoin is the first score-keeping system on the planet that builds trust between players, but doesn't require any trust up-front, because it is 100% verifiable. I just bought a Pen. On Amazon. With BITCOIN.

I have made my first payment on Amazon with Bitcoin. It took 7 seconds, and I had not paid any additional fees. It felt strange. I think that was the same experience as playing with the first Credit Card in the world. https://open.tube/videos/watch/3cbf411a-1c01-4b52-acb8-fadf691e425c Submitted May 15, 2019 at 06:54PM by vladimirvr http://bit.ly/2VGNVp6

Learn, Grow, and Appreciate.

I was a barista at starbucks before I was introduced to cryptocurrency on July of 2017. I was talking to another worker as I was making some ones drink. A regular customer that I talk too when he comes in, heard me tell the worker I wanted to switch programs for university (I was studying Computer Science and graduated). The customer told me "sorry for being nosy, but I heard you are switching from Computer Science. May I ask why? That stuff is interesting." I told him that it drives me nuts already in school, so I can't see myself doing this stuff as a day to day job in the future. He took his drink and sat down. I took my break and I saw him reading a book on blockchains. He asked if I know anything about distributed ledgers? Lol I said All I know was Bitcoin had something to do with it. Then I asked, do you think I should buy some? He laughed and said well you're asking a customer having a coffee on investment advice. He told me to read up on blockchai
