Can we please organize all the information about what is going on right now in this thread? Coinbase, Kraken, GDAX, and so on? There's no real information here in the sub anymore? Just memes?

Guys, we should make a list of everything that is wrong right now. How is Coinbase doing? Gdax? Kraken? Below I would like to add the status of other Bitcoin services as you guys keep commenting your experiences. The objective would be for us to have a good overview of whats going on right now. Mods, please let this post live. We need information during times where everyone is "What the hell is going on". Please upvote this thread and the good comments and I'll keep editing throughout the day. Bitfinex is doing fine (unless you margin traded yesterday during the flash crash), I didn't try to withdraw though so I don't know if that's working right now. Cryptopia (New Zealand exchange) is doing fine, no downtimes, possible to withdraw and everything seems ok besides everything melting down. GDAX is currently stable. Kraken is having troubles for a long time now. Orders don't go through, 404 errors and duplicated orders, you name it. Basicall

Stop hating on Coinbase

You guys are too hateful towards Coinbase. Without them and their easy-to-use website/app Bitcoin would never be as popular as it is right now with regular people. Currently it’s top 10 on the App Store where I live which is awesome. Yes, their servers were down yesterday but you can’t really blame them. They had 8 times more customers than their last peak time. If you had planned a dinner for 5 people and suddenly 40 hungry people showed up, what would’ve happened? Hopefully they’re expanding their servers right now and we won’t have a problem for awhile. I see the server problems as a good thing, 8 times more customers than their last peak?! We’re going mainstream guys, don’t forget to fasten your seatbelt. :) Submitted November 30, 2017 at 06:17PM by agent9747 http://ift.tt/2i3F1vu

Me, Calaber24p, Eating My Left Nut

When I made the statement 2 years ago at this point, bitcoin was much less mature and far lower in value. I had always believed that at some point it would hit 10k, but I didnt believe it would be before the end of 2017. Needless to say, I was wrong. I am invested in bitcoin and have been a supporter since 2012, so hitting 10k was a mixed bag. I will still be bag holding my coins going forward, but unfortunately my testicle bag will have to part with half its stash. Don't invest recklessly

I posted about this just a few months ago , but I feel that it's necessary to repeat. The Bitcoin price is on an unbelievably ridiculous upswing which is rather likely to be a bubble. If you're trying to get rich quick by dumping your retirement funds into BTC at $10k, then your "investment strategy" is not much better than someone betting everything on a game of roulette. High-risk-high-reward investing is not necessarily bad, but you have to seriously look at your thought process to make sure that you're not: Being blinded by dreams of getting rich quickly, similarly to people who dump money on very-negative-EV lottery tickets. Getting wrapped up in "HODL" memes, reddit comments, and other groupthink, which is sometimes fun, but absolutely the last appropriate source of investment advice . Acting based on panic thinking like, "OMG the price is going to $1 million and I will miss my chance forever if I don't buy right now " or "

Yeah, but these go to $11k.

Unaware Millionaire

Just called into my local indie cycle shop to buy a tube. Bloke who runs it is a nice chap, doesn't sting you etc. Anyway, after paying in fiat I ask him if he's considered taking bitcoin, and he says "I don't know much about them but I've got some, bought them ages ago on the advice of a friend for about five hundred quid" so I ask him how many he's got... A hundred and fifty... Showed him the charts, advised him to get an accountant and left him doing his best goldfish impression. :) Submitted November 27, 2017 at 07:43PM by skelly890 http://ift.tt/2BpKUM2

Guys, I am out

So I sold the last of my 22ish BTC yesterday. I first got in around September of 2013 when the price was $130. I later set up a weekly buy on Coinbase buying the majority of my coins between $200 to $400. My original goal back then was to accumulate 21 BTC and be in the million club. I turned it off in 2015 once I was well over 21 coins. Of course looking back I wish I had never turned it off. So why did I sell? The value is now enough that I can pay my capital gains and still have enough to pay off my house leaving me completely debt free. I found myself constantly stressing over the fact I was storing close to 200K and I also fully expect a pull back at some point soon. Once my house is paid off I will most likely start buying back in again using money that would have been going towards a house payment. Things I learned Test your recovery process. If you have a hardware wallet (and you should) send a small amount of crypto to it then wipe it and reload it using your seed. This

Who would win?...

Reasons the btc 'deathspiral' is nothing but FUD and won't work

I've seen plenty of posts lately (especially on r/BTC ) about this 'dragonslayer' plot to put btc into a death spiral at the difficulty adjustment (which happened a little while ago). I don't think it will work. The incentive structure works. It has worked fine for the last 9 years. If hash power leaves and fees go up, miners come back to collect the fees. During the last spam attack we saw some blocks that had fee rewards almost as much as the block reward. There is plenty of money to be made for miners. The last bch pump happened before they had fixed their EDA. Their difficulty now adjusts very quickly. If miners flock to bch the difficulty will go up and it will be less profitable to mine. It's all self balancing. Bcash is expecting that the low hash rate and high transaction fees will cause the btc price to plummet thus reducing mining profitability. If bitcoins main use case was as a exchange of value this might work, but it's not. There have bee

Finally bought in today

I have been eyeballing BitCoin for a year or so and seeing how it's only going up in price, I decided to buy 20 bucks worth. Decided I'm going to buy a little each payday. Feels good. Update: Thanks to everyone who was supportive and offered advice. I can see there are some uber critical folks here but the bottom line is that I simply wasn't ready to buy in before now and better late than never. I'm not looking at this as a get rich quick scheme but rather a long term investment and at very least a means of putting money back for a rainy day. Again, thanks to everyone offering supportive comments! Submitted November 24, 2017 at 09:51PM by _justanaveragejoe http://ift.tt/2zjefq3

Thanksgiving PSA: There will NEVER be enough BTC for all of today's fiat millionaires to own JUST ONE. Get one if you can.

Total number of millionaires (in USD value) worldwide is around 33 million (source: http://ift.tt/2gi5xUP ) There will only ever be a maximum of 21 million bitcoin. Thus: there isn't enough Bitcoin in the world for every fiat millionaire to own even ONE SINGLE BITCOIN. If you have even one BTC today: Enjoy the feeling. You are an early adopter. I got married in November 2016. Marriage expenses in India are off the charts. I had some bitcoins, and the obvious thing was to sell the bitcoins to get cash.

But I didn't. I took a loan of $1500 from friends. And the $1500 that remained invested in bitcoin is today worth $18000. I just remember how desperate I was to keep my bitcoin. How much I tried to not sell them. And the result is pretty good, as of now. Who knows what happens in future to bitcoin price. But I am not going to give up Bitcoin. Its a hedge against inflation, if nothing else. Edit update: my marriage actually broke down. But shit happens. Submitted November 23, 2017 at 03:31PM by hwthrowaway92 http://ift.tt/2zvwdKp

BCH is having another go at dethroning Bitcoin. It's no secret, they have admitted its part of a plan. Last time they attempted to tank BTC it was their investors/supporters that lost out. Mass adoption is finally happening...and not in the way you might think.

It finally clicked for me today....mass adoption is actually happening as we speak. I used to think mass adoption meant I can pay with BTC everywhere I go. And I still think that we’ll get there eventually - but that’s not a requirement for mass adoption. It never was. BTC was originally envisioned as a P2P payment system - but in retrospect that was never what was unique about it. Quick, semi-anonymous P2P payments were already a solved problem in the world. (Visa - The first world at least.) Transmitting value over the internet was a solved problem. (PayPal/Visa.) What was actually novel and has tremendous value to the world was the decentralized store of value. It doesn’t matter if it was Satoshi’s vision or not. That’s the reason everyone is buying bitcoin. It’s way too reductionist to say people are buying it just because the price is going up. It’s going up and staying up because people are finally appreciating the intrinsic value in the system. Scaling is on everyone’s mind

We must push for SegWit adoption

Long time lurker, but feel that this is important. SegWit adoption is stagnating to say the least, actually dropping since last month ( http://ift.tt/2vAlqs8 ). If we want Bitcoin to be useful, and newbies not to be put off, we must make a conscious effort to bring down the fees. It's just not good enough to say BTC is only a store of value - SegWit was developed amongst other reasons so that it would be adopted and improve scalability. Similarly to how we used to raise awareness of Bitcoin with various merchants by encouraging them to accept it as form of payment, we must start pushing for SegWit adoption by calling out the biggest culprits that haven't adopted it yet - and praising the ones that do, such as ShapeShift. Let's compile a list of wallets, exchanges, and mining pools that haven't implemented SegWit on their wallets as of yet, and pester them to give us an ETA on when this will be implemented. If we start making noise on this, things are likely to chang

Decided to have a look at what we could learn about the Tether hack from the blockchain, the coins are still moving around so I may edit this later as this develops. It actually starts with this wallet here: http://ift.tt/2BaFjck Look familiar? Go to the last page, that was the wallet used to steal 19000BTC from Bitstamp back in January 2015 (and which was still receiving coins from Bitstamp as recently as September, well done guys). This wallet made two transactions, the first is fairly innocuous but I'll come back to it later: http://ift.tt/2z9MqAq This address then sends out a further 0.01BTC: http://ift.tt/2BaFoNa The following morning it sends 0.01 to the address that was several hours later used to empty the Tether wallet: http://ift.tt/2zcb7fu I'm not quite sure why they would make a deposit like this to it hours before - perhaps to test that everything is working? At 10:53, the wallet makes several transactions transferring 23 million tethers from the tether

So you want in on bitcoin?

Guide for Noobs Simple and Not A Lot of Money setup an account on coinbase.com, buy your coins, walk away until next year or later, fees are ~1.5% which is $1.5 USD for a $100 USD of coin note coinbase does have an option to buy via credit card instead of a bank account, fees are ~4% when you do that Guide for Not Noobs Less Simple -setup an account on coinbase.com, move dollars into your account, setup an account on gdax.com (same company, same login), move your cash from coinbase to gdax, buy your coins on GDAX at Market, fees are cheaper 0.25% versus 1.5% -consider buying alternative coins supported by coinbase No Fees -all of the above but use GDAX's Limit/Buy, zero fees, but you have to wait for the market to dip below your buy price More Money Available -setup several Limit/Buy orders at different price points to capture dips when you are away More Control but More Complex -it's possible coinbase could go out of business, they are FDIC insured up to $250

This scam is unacceptable. Let's do something about this!

To all the crypto millionaires, billionaires, trillionaires etc etc.

There is one thing that won't change no matter how many bitcoins you have or how much it soars: your health. It is about time that you start exercising, doing yoga/meditation, going out more, eating better food, having better posture, being joyful all the time, overall just being a casual easygoing person. You need to shed the weight of the millions/billions/trillions you carry, IMHO. EDIT: To explain further, it isn't the first time that people have become fabulously rich in such a short time. All throughout history people have found fortunes virtually overnight. And almost always, they end up worse than they were before. Learn from history my dudes. You can only enjoy your wealth to the extent your body allows it. So, keeping your body in the best possible position should be the no. 1 priority right now, not whether bitcoin is going to hit $100K or $1 mil, IMHO. Don't tell anyone about your bitcoin profits

Long story made short, I told some co-workers that I made about 400 euros by investing in bitcoin. Now this is a tiny amount of money, but it has not stopped some of my colleagues from asking me to share my gains with them. One of them is getting married and he suggested that I should give him a generous cash gift. Another one said that I made a promise to give him some profits a few months ago when bitcoin was at 3000 euros. I don't ever recall making such promises and even if I did, I'm not legally bound to give him anything. I basically told all them to get lost (cuss words left out from this post) as I was the one taking a risk with my money and not them. Had things gone south nobody would have offered a helping hand and yet when profits are made everyone expects a share just because they simply know your name. There were a couple of people who only asked for help on how they can invest in bitcoin and I gladly pointed them to a number of exchanges. Now Imagine if instead

Bitcoin is a protocol. It will continuously improve, unlike a traditional tangible asset.

I see many comments on forums and in the media that suggest that bitcoin will have value until/unless some other crypto replaces it. These ideas are fundamentally flawed because they are comparing it to something like a car, which can become obsolete when a better model comes out. Bitcoin is a protocol, not a physical good. It can be updated and improved over time. This has already occurred--Segwit is an example of an update to improve transactions. The idea that some new crypto will suddenly take over and devalue Bitcoin doesn't really hold weight because any technological improvement can be incorporated into Bitcoin. Right now, Bitcoin is the cutting edge as far as brand recognition and adoption. Do not mistake the value that this holds. The reason 99% of movies coming out are remakes or reboots is that people tend to buy brands they know and trust. Cryptocurrencies as a whole could face troubles. All these scamcoins and ICOs is could put a bad taste in the mouths of the unin

PSA: Coinbase, BitPay, Blockchain.com and Shapeshift are intentionally overcharging on fees and boycotting Segwit to make your transactions more expensive.

The minimum transaction fee to get into the next block is ~30 sat/B and they are setting the fees to ~20 times that amount. See http://ift.tt/2seYbEL for proof. Segwit has been production ready for 3 months and they haven't implemented it yet and refuse to give any ETA. They are doing this to drive you to altcoins which are not as decentralized as Bitcoin and easier to manipulate. This is all part of their venture capital investor agenda to take over the Bitcoin open source project. If you have an account there, please write to their support and ask why are they setting the transaction fees so high, and why are they not interested in implementing Segwit. There are plenty of other services which do a much better job at reducing your transaction costs. Please use them instead. The silence is deafening. NYA CEOs must issue public statements

A number of very high profile bitcoin companies publicly supported the Segwit2X hard fork. As we have just learned, had the HF occurred, the entire network would have crashed; probably causing the price to crash so hard a years long recovery would have been required. Those of us who fought against the S2X hard fork were called trolls, brainwashed, paid shills, and worse. We suffered through endless online attacks while we tried to make the clear, cogent, rational, argument that any agreement which didn't include the core developers was meaningless. It is not enough that these companies dropped out of the agreement when they realized it was going to fail in the marketplace anyway; they were prepared to drive the network off a cliff up until the last moment. They never should have gone along with it in the first place without technical leadership and competence behind it; without the support of the core devs and without professional software engineering practices. The mistakes

An expression of gratitude to the bitcoin core developers

I have been hodling bitcoin for almost 5 years. I rarely contribute. I’ve seen all the drama unfold. Bitcoin has been, and continues to be, by far, the greatest story that’s ever been told. I want to send my genuine heartfelt thank you to the developers (past and present) who have contributed to the bitcoin core project. All I kindly request of them is to ensure bitcoin merely exists for the rest of our lives (and beyond). Just pure survival. Keep it breathing. Keep its heart beating. Thanks to bitcoin, I no longer need to work. I am financially free with minimal risk of that status changing if bitcoin continues to just survive. That’s not to say that my financial freedom can’t exist with fiat. It can, but there are greater risks attached (my money being inflated away, my income stream suddenly stopping or reducing, the government/bank freezes my bank account because I did/said something they don’t like). Because of bitcoin, I have freedom of speech, financial independence and time

I started a small business using a fraction of a bitcoin given to me on this sub in 2013. Just wanted to say thanks to everyone

I was originally disappointed with some poor experiences using Coinbase and mentioning my issues on this sub. I never asked for anything, simply was whining about problems I had with Coinbase at the time when they were being flooded with new accounts and support requests. Everyone was great about helping me out and pointing me in the right direction to have things set up properly. Unexpectedly, someone sent me about a quarter of a bitcoin to repair my feelsies, which was quite a lot of currency to send over the internet to a stranger, especially on an alt account that had been fairly recently created. I ended up using it to cover the costs of starting a little business. I now manufacture stenography keyboards that are compatible with Plover for stuff like live transcription (or just fast typing in general). Now that the design all done, I'll soon be uploading the PCB files and case design online to be freely used for anyone to make or modify, even for commercial purposes, unde

200 BTC - telling my wife

Regular lurker here but this is a throwaway account for privacy reasons. Also, English is not my first language. Between mid-2012 and early 2013, I was lucky and forward-thinking enough to have bought around 200 BTC. Fast forward today, my investment of less than $6,000 is now worth around 1,8 million dollars (on paper and before taxes, considering both BTC & BCH). Nobody knows this, including my wife, and I'm thinking about telling her. It's an insane amount for sure, but perhaps still not life-changing or enough to live off interest: we are in our mid-thirties and we don't own a house yet (we rent and we are planning to buy one for around $300k-$350k), married since 3 years, one kid. We both work, I'm self-employed in marketing ($30k-$50k/year, highly variable) and she is an employee ($25k/year, stable). Ironically and due to poor money management, we don't have much savings in fiat and we live paycheck to paycheck. My main concerns are: job: while I lo

If bitcoin made you fabulously wealthy, do you think you would attack the bitcoin network?

Roger Ver, by all accounts, is fabulously wealthy. He's achieved what many bitcoiner's dream about. He got in early enough that he never has to work another day for the rest of his life. Not only is he financially independent, he is staggeringly wealthy by all accounts. He can live a lifestyle that only winners of the Powerball lottery could possibly dream of. He can own Ferrari's, Lamborghini's, mansions, a private jet, travel the world, stay in exotic locations, and live a life of grand adventure. If he felt altruistic, he could use his vast wealth to help others. One of the key benefits of being this fabulously wealthy is that you should be able to remove worry and stress from your life; yet Ver is prone to highly emotional outbursts and frequent anger. Rather than helping others, his behavior has led thousands to financial ruin; whether that is through his MtGox assurances or his recent effort of just this past weekend attacking the bitcoin network directly.

No matter how bad your day is remember that only a few days ago some dude panic sold his bitcoin at $5,500 and bought bcash at $2,800. 😂
