I am now officially taking LIGHTNING payments on my online store. Here's the rundown on how I got it done.

E-commerce is a tricky bitch, but if you can manage to understand the psychology of selling a product online and you learn the skills to allow for a seamless transaction, then you're in for a career that you own and control. A few days ago, I told the community about my progress i accepting Bitcoin on my apparel store . We're getting around 50-60k impressions every month, a lot of eyes and transactions around a small operation like ours. Nevertheless, the mere fact that we're accepting Bitcoin as a payment option goes to show the possibility of driving this mainstream. Let me elaborate: Shopify just announced that they crossed 1 million merchants on the platform. Bitcoin is being offered as a NATIVE checkout option via Coinbase Commerce. However, this is where things fall apart. Here's why: Few people want to spend their Bitcoin Those that do want to spend it and believe in its future as a currency don't trust Coinbase So, I got to work. I did my research

Chase bank just reversed my fraudulent reimbursement on basis that they believe the company in question is legitimate and I must have forgotten I bought $180 worth of BS supplements from them.

Last month I noticed two $90 charges (from a company I have never heard of) in one of my Chase accounts. This particular account is only used for automatic payments like my mortgage, utilities, investments, Netflix subscription, etc. So no single payments should occur, let alone more than once a month. I contacted Chase and they said my card could be compromised and to order a new one. They reimbursed me for the $180 and I ordered a new card. All is good, except the card took 20 days to get here but thats another story. Anyways, I look today at my account and notice ANOTHER $90 charge from this company, and I scroll down to find out that they REVERSED MY REIMBURSEMENT. I contacted them and they basically said Chase doesn't believe this to be a fraud charge and reversed the decision. I MUST be buying something from this online store that I am not remembering. So this is my life now. I'll get randomly billed $90 because my bank doesn't think it's fraud, and canceling

Recently Bought a Ledger Nano X using Bitcoin...Bitpay is very very very Shit.

I posted this over in r/ledgerwallet too and am posting it here in case it gets taken down. Merde. This is more of a rant, so don't take the hyperbole too seriously. The only way to purchase a Ledger device using Bitcoin is through Bitpay. They have a needlessly complicated payment method/setup. Usually when you make a Bitcoin payment you get a QR code to a Bitcoin address. With shitpay, you get a QR code to a Bitpay link. apperntly you can open this link with a wallet which should in theory automatically set up the payment for you. But with a Trezor device this is not the case. when opening a bitpay link with the Trezor wallet, nothing happens. no payment information is revealed, no bitcoin address is shown for sending a payment. Thus I had no idea where to send the payment for my order when trying to pay on my Trezor. So I had to rely on a third party bitpay url decoding website to unscramble the damnable url into an actual Bitcoin address. I sent the payment to this a

Venezuela UPDATE "living" here. 1 BTC is around 230,000,000 Bs (Bolivares). Two weeks ago it was 154,000,000 Bs. Monthly minimum wage is around 7 USD (it was 8 USD before). 552 BTC were traded last week using LBTC (last week was 549) which is around 80,900,000,000 Bs. AMA.

Hello, it is me just updating the situation here in Venezuela. You can check my post history if this is the first time you read about me. Minimum wage (which is earned by a big chuck of the population, not like other countries) is 150.000 Bs. wage (7 USD) + 150.000 Bs. food bonus (7 USD) PER MONTH. Biggest bank note is 50,000 Bs. which is around 2 USD. You need to use debit and credit, bank transfer, cryptos and USD to pay anything. This after 5 zeroes were shaved from the currency less than a year ago and 3 zeroes more 12 years ago. So it would be 5,000,000,000,000 Bs. Official rate (Venezuelan Central Bank http://bcv.org.ve/ ) is 20.454 Bs. per each USD. I have officially reached a post-price mindset

I didn't particularly care as Bitcoin's price trended downward over the last few weeks. I also didn't feel much joy at the large spike the other day. It made me realize that I have reached a place where: 1) price is no longer my primary motivational factor with Bitcoin. I care more about the global potential of a non-sovereign, decentralized money. 2) large price swings when we're still so early overall really don't mean much. I have to say, it feels good. Price will keep swinging, but Bitcoin always moves forward. Submitted October 28, 2019 at 04:53AM by ninjajaguar https://ift.tt/2JofsDC

Recovered my 4 year old wallet

I am super stoked about this. A long time ago (2011-2015), on an old machine (an iMac), I used Armory. I was selling that old machine, so I swept my keys into an electrum wallet, and I replaced the hard drive that was in it knowing one day I would come back to it. Well, a couple years after that, I had issues because I couldn't access the files from that hard drive without another mac (trust me, I tried. I password protected that hard drive so only booting it from a legit mac would grant me access to it). And, I lost my paper backup... Luckily, my friend had an old mac mini he let me borrow, and I sat on it for about another 2 years. Today, I finally pulled my wallet off, and could not remember the password I put on the wallet. Thank god for the btcrecover tool, because that cracked my password in under a second (I remembered what it could of been, but not exactly. I would have not guessed what it actually was). It's not a huge amount of bitcoin. But it was more than I re

Who treats bitcoin like their savings account?

I started to think this way around March/April this year, when price was around 4-5k. I figured my rate of return on keeping my money in the bank, was a small percentage at best, and was sold on the hype that the next halvening can bring. In my opinion and in real time practical application, ya'll can see this worked well for me. Now im wondering, who else is does this? I really think its ingenious and ive converted many people into this idea, simply because NOW is the time to best accumulate and hold bitcoin for at least another 18 months...although the same most likely will not hold true after this hype cycle, just like having this idea in 2018 wouldnt have done you many favors. Thoughts? Long bitcoin, short the bankers. Yes sir. Submitted October 27, 2019 at 01:26PM by btc1987 https://ift.tt/2qQlbff

The Truth

I got into Bitcoin not because I believed in what it could achieve as a global currency, but because I was looking to turn a quick buck. This was back when the price was something like 4100 a year ago. And I didn’t even have a lot of money to invest. Something like 300 bucks. So I bought and prayed for volatility. I don’t do that anymore. Over the course of a year through the many ups and downs, I’ve educated myself on the pros and cons of the currency and the technology behind it. And that’s all thanks to this sub. So much of it is still so over my head, but I’ve switched camps. I’m not ready to spend my fat sats on a pizza anytime soon, but I’m more than happy to accumulate and watch the price of BTC with minimal temptation to sell. I used to be a moonboy. Now, I just wanna buy my daughter diapers at the Walmart. Submitted October 26, 2019 at 03:37PM by jmojam https://ift.tt/2ojvmI5

How 4 BTC on the lightning network is likely not lost after all, at least not that way.

Just after u/ZipoTm posted his story, I checked my node logs for breach transactions, but found none. I concluded that I was not party to any of the channel funds he has lost. Upon doing some more investigation, I have found that I was. But what happened is not at all how the story was portrayed. That kind of misunderstandings tend to happen when you are kind of rash, blame the technology, and fail to acknowledge it was your fault. Nevertheless, he does still deserve help to find these coins. He still have them, though, at least those in my channel with him, provided he has not deleted anything. So, what happened? On october 2nd, the lightning-casino node is starting with an old channel db. It tries to reconnect to all its channel peers, who notice that his state is out of date. This, however, is not the same as a force-close. What happen then is that data loss protection protocol will handle this. My node sees this data loss, and says: 2019-10-02 09:26:53.429 [ERR] LNWL: Chann

What's Really At Stake

At times I believe people forget that bitcoin is a political protest. I am afraid that over the course of mainstream adoption we have undereestimated how dangerous governments could and would be and what their motives would ultimately be to 'tame' bitcoin. And this control they have comes almost exclusively from their ability to attack custodianship. The point of bitcoin was to politically prohibit this elitist behavior by removing custodianship, yet 10 years later, we are all reliant upon centralized exchanges. This has to stop. And the main manner in which it will, is when we have decentralized liquidity. Decentralized liquidity is the determining factor, and in order to do that we need for people to be able to host their liquidity the same way they host a seed for torrenting, in almost the same exact manner. We need to completely remove centralized servers and centralized processsing from the equation, virtually everything needs to be run bittorrent style, but especiall

The next big thing will start out looking like a toy (2010)

Disruptive technologies are dismissed as toys because when they are first launched they “undershoot” user needs. The first telephone could only carry voices a mile or two. The leading telco of the time, Western Union, passed on acquiring the phone because they didn’t see how it could possibly be useful to businesses and railroads – their primary customers. What they failed to anticipate was how rapidly telephone technology and infrastructure would improve ( technology adoption is usually non-linear due to so-called complementary network effects). The same was true of how mainframe companies viewed the PC (microcomputer), and how modern telecom companies viewed Skype. via ( https://cdixon.org/2010/01/03/the-next-big-thing-will-start-out-looking-like-a-toy/ ) found this on HN and thought you guys might like it. "the vast majority of people don't understand how btc works"

Just ask around, the vast majority of people doesn't understand how fiat works and strongly believe that their paper currencies are backed by gold. And still they use it everyday. The vast majority of people doesn't understand how the economy works and still they trade goods and services everyday. The vast majority of people just follows the few who understand how the world works, the ones who set the rules... Submitted October 20, 2019 at 05:38PM by SomebodyWhoWasMe https://ift.tt/32xsPJk

Offline Receiving is Coming to Lightning

At the LNConf, a developer from Breez was just onstage and announced a new open-source project that will soon allow lightning wallet users to to receive payments via lightning without being online. The project is called Lightning Rod . It works using hodl-invoices and a special routing node called a Lightning Rod. Essentially, if you want to receive lightning payments when you're offline, your wallet provider (e.g. Breez, Acinq, Lightning Labs, etc.) needs to act as a routing node to you. If you're offline, they would use a hodl-invoice (which allows routing nodes to delay a payment up to the point of invoice expiration) and send your wallet an alert. The next time you get online, you'd receive that alert, open up your wallet, and -- if the invoice hasn't expired -- your wallet provider would notice you're online now and complete the route. This idea allows wallet providers to let their users receive lightning payments even if they're offline, without any cust

Stop trying to time the market! Just have to apply the dollar cost averaging strategy for at least 1 year and you will always be green. No one who has done it for more than a year has lost money. If you started DCA in December 2017 at all time high, you would still be more than 25% up

Brazil has only 40 bitcoin full nodes and I own 2 of them

I have to say after visiting this website it kinda bothered me there is less than 10k nodes in the world, I guess that´s enough but I really thought there were a lot more than that It made me very happy yo know HTC is making a phone that could run a full node in it and the other day I read that there are some plug and play bitcoin full nodes if someone doesn´t want to go through the trouble of assembling one themselves, or doesn´t want to let your computer/laptop on 24/7. Anyway, I just wish people would be more into learning about bitcoin and help it grow more then sitting and waiting for it to moon. If you help bitcoin grow strong, it will probably make people believe more in it and thus make it moon, right? Just sharing my 2 satoshis here. What is the lightening network? How does it work?

I keep seeing people talking about it but I don't really know what it is. Analogies are fine - but one article said "it's like having someone you want to trade with on speed dial". This doesn't help me understand what's going on. From what I do understand (correct me where I'm wrong please) is it's a 'network' that adds another layer to the block chain. This layer doesn't need to be broadcasted. How does this work exactly? From my understanding all transactions have to be broadcast to verify authenticity. It makes exchanging/trading faster and cheaper or maybe even free. Why is it cheaper and faster? Any more insight is always appreciated and any links to articles or videos that are informative on the topic would be helpful. Thanks! I found a 2019 prediction that Satoshi made in January 2009 (via bitcoin-list archives)

I thought this was very interesting - text follows: " I would be surprised if 10 years from now we're not using electronic currency in some way, now that we know a way to do it that won't inevitably get dumbed down when the trusted third party gets cold feet. It could get started in a narrow niche like reward points, donation tokens, currency for a game or micropayments for adult sites. Initially it can be used in proof-of-work applications for services that could almost be free but not quite. It can already be used for pay-to-send e-mail. The send dialog is resizeable and you can enter as long of a message as you like. It's sent directly when it connects. The recipient doubleclicks on the transaction to see the full message. If someone famous is getting more e-mail than they can read, but would still like to have a way for fans to contact them, they could set up Bitcoin and give out the IP address on their website. The ugly experience

I heard about Bitcoin first time in march 2018. Since then, I invested as much as I could, around 100$ a month. That's 15% of my monthly paycheck. (at 7200$ cost average) I told my best friends about it and instantly became a joke for them. Now they make fun of me as I lost completely their credibility. All fine. What started really to bother me, is my girlfriend. I lost completely her credibility about business and money. Like the friends mentioned above, she doesn't believe me that blockchain is a life changing technology. My parents also advised me to stop throwing money. Well... I won't listen to any of them and I won't sell. Did you have similar experiences and how did you deal with them? Submitted October 18, 2019 at 10:28AM by BlueBloodStrawberry https://ift.tt/32mtM74

Why this coming halving will be the most dramatic yet!

Prior to the November 2012 halving the price was $12 and there were 50 bitcoin being mined per block ($600) meaning the market was absorbing $604,800 of new bitcoin per week. That halving reduced the new supply by $302,400 per week causing the market cap to rise by $14 billion dollars over the following year. Prior to the July 2016 halving the price was $650 and there were 25 bitcoin being mined per block ($16,250) meaning the market was absorbing $16,380,000 of new bitcoin per week. That halving reduced the new supply by $8,190,000 per week causing the market cap to rise by $300 billion dollars over the following 18 months. Prior to the May 2020 halving lets say the price is $10,000 (hypothetically for arguments sake) and there are 12.5 bitcoin being mined per block ($125,000) meaning the market will be absorbing $126,000,000 of new bitcoin per week. The halving will reduce the new supply by $63,000,000 per week potentially causing the market cap to rise by trillions of dollars ove

Venezuela UPDATE "living" here. 1 BTC is around 154,000,000 Bs (Bolivares). Two weeks ago it was 160,000,000 Bs. Monthly minimum wage was increased today to around 8 USD (it was 2 USD before). 542 BTC were traded last week using LBTC (last week was 642) which is around 84,974,000,000 Bs.

As you probably know I'm a Venezuelan living here. AMA even if it looks dumb, you can also check my post history. Government today increased the monthly minimum wage (which is earned by a big chuck of the population) from 40.000 Bs. per month (around 2 USD) + 25.000 Bs. food bonus to 150.000 Bs. wage (8 USD) + 150.000 Bs. food bonus (8 USD) PER MONTH. Biggest bank note is 50,000 Bs. which is 2.5 USD. You need to use debit and credit, bank transfer, cryptos and USD to pay anything. This after 5 zeroes were shaved from the currency less than a year ago and 3 zeroes more 12 years ago. So it would be 5,000,000,000,000 Bs. Official rate (Venezuelan Central Bank http://bcv.org.ve/ ) is 19.733 Bs. per each USD. Got technical questions? Ask here.

Background: Software engineer since the 90s. Heard about Bitcoin in 2010 but didn't pay much attention. Got in late after the $1,200 ATH and bought all the way down to $250. Deleted my primary account a while ago but have been lurking. I've been seeing a lot of misinformation on here on the technical side of things so I'd like to jump back in and try to clear things up. I'm not a economist or financial analyst so while I'm happy to tell you what I think is going to happen to the price your guess is probably as good as mine! Bring on your technical questions! Satoshi Belled the Cat

I was reading some of Æsop's fables with my kids recently, and we read the one called "Belling the Cat". Basically, it's about a bunch of mice who are discussing how they can avoid getting eaten by a cat, and one of them suggests they put a ribbon around its neck with a bell, so they'd hear the cat coming from far away. They all think it's a great idea, until one mouse asks, "But who is to bell the cat?" The moral of the story is "It is easy to propose impossible remedies." Anyway, I was thinking about this and realized that Satoshi Nakamoto not only kept his identity secret enough to be the one to bell the cat, but then also disappeared before the metaphorical cat could seek him out for revenge. Also, this helps explain why altcoins are pointless: the cat has already been belled, and now that it's aware of the bell, any mouse that tries to put another bell on it is just asking to be eaten. Bitcoin Address Observer

Recently a friend of mine and his girlfriend got their first child. Like I always do, I printed a paper wallet, transferred some Satoshis on it, put it in a sealed envelope and gave it to the parents with the order, to give it to him when he reaches adulthood. Because the new born kid should not suffer from the ignorance of his parents not buying some Satoshis when it was cheap. :) I trust my friend for not opening the envelope, no matter what the price is doing in all those years. But I don't trust his girlfriend. :) So I decided to develop an app to track specific Bitcoin addresses which informs you when something happens on this address. And here it is (Android only): https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.ceaver.bao It's probably useful for many other usecases as well, if you e.g. have a Bitcoin donation address at the end of your Medium article or just want to be sure your money is still where you expect it to be. :) It's open source, the code is here: h

Bitcoin will not fall in the coming recession..

For three reasons: If a recession was obvious and bitcoin actually fell the opportunity to buy cheap coins would be too enticing given that the thing that bitcoin was literally born out of ( the 08' financial crisis) was happening again.. Smart money is already sitting on the largest cash positions they have ever had specifically for buying opportunities like this. The halving is in six months, so even if demand for new mining supply dropped by half in a recession the halving would mean prices would stay the same.. People will be fleeing stocks globally and even bonds this time (more money than bitcoin has ever known). Gold will be the go to safe haven, but if 1% of the money going into gold goes into bitcoin instead the price of bitcoin will rise far more than gold percentage wise as bitcoin is a tiny market compared to gold. The price may trend sideways or slightly down through the beginning of a recession but it wont crash, and once the banks start their inevitable bail-ins

I'm writing this because my country is entering a currency crisis the US has put sanctions on the US dollar I don't know how I can spread the word about this but I wish that I could make a change. My country is ruled by politicians who care only for themselves and they left the entire economy to collapse on people for multiple decades now we don't have 24h electricity, the internet is barely maintainable, If only electricity was available at least like Venezuela we could mine Bitcoin and slowly build our economy again based on it. I made a satoshis piggy bank for my son

I tweeted this sometime ago: Bitcoin hardware wallet that’s WiFi connected and shows the dollar value of the bitcoin within it would be useful as a piggy bank for kids. Watching their savings grow over the long haul would help kids develop low time preference The idea really grew on me, so I thought maybe I can build one myself with a Raspberry Pi. And I did. Here it is: https://imgur.com/8VExyUB https://imgur.com/aOAxtJl To be clear, this is not a wallet. It's simply a bitcoin address tracker. It's programmed to check the satoshi balance of a bitcoin address, multiply the balance by the current satoshi price then display both the satoshi balance as well the dollar value, as you can see in the pictures. It refreshes every 60 minutes. I put the device in my son's room. I started him off with a few dollars[1]. He then added a few more dollars from his allowance. I explained to him how the dollar value of his satoshis is designed to grow over the long term. He rea

The similarities struck me. Both are revolutions. Both are fighting against extremely powerful enemies. Both are fighting against tyranny, oppression, fighting for freedom. Both have been accused of being associated with criminals, of being destructive, when in fact their enemies are the real criminals walking large. Both are being ignored, betrayed or derided by companies and businesses. Both are characterised by an enduring hope for a better future. Both are happening now. What is the status on Lightning?

Has been really quiet lately. It seems a year or so ago, it was daily posts about exponential growth of the network and adoption, and now, nothing. Also, a year+ ago you would get flamed, if not banned, for any kind of scepticism, but in the hopes that tempers have settled a bit: Do people still expect Lightning to be the second coming of bitcoin? And the one true way to do smallish commercial transactions? Or is there still some hold-outs who expect on-chain coffee purchases to be a thing. I can't help but feel that the shine has gone off this tech. According to many, it was "in production" and "ready for use" last year, yet adoption does not seem to be happening, so what is the holdup?
