Is worth buying a hardware wallet?

I'm 16 years old and started stacking satoshis for about a year. So, I actually use Tails + Electrum (BIP39 seed generated by Ian Colleman tool), it was the cheapest way to start stacking since, because I didn't had a job or money income. And now I have a considerable stack and want to switch from Tails + Electrum to a Hardware Wallet. I search on internet and there's people saying bad and saying good about these hardware wallets (Ledger/Trezor/Coldcard and others) Do you guys experts suggest me an specific brand of hardware wallet? I was buying a Ledger Nano S Plus but I saw too much negatives feedbacks about it. So I regret it. I'm actually a novice on Bitcoin and don't know what is the best option to this. (I actually use Bitcoin for Inflation Resistance cause I live in a bad economic behavior country + Money Saving [ Actually 76% of all my income because I live in my mom's basement and don't have any serious thing to do with my money ] ) (sorry

I orange-pilled my coworker and he was actually listening.

I may have planted the seed of another bitcoiner. I just have to make sure this plant gets water and sunlight to grow. My coworker is typically known by other coworkers to be on the quiet side. But whenever we work together, we are able to talk naturally. Probably because we are a similar demographic. Yesterday he asked how bitcoin was doing. I then go on for two hours about bitcoin this and bitcoin that. Usually people cut me off by that time, or they are mentally checked out of the conversation (in one ear out the other). But I knew he was listening because he was asking questions. And when he understood what I was saying, he would re-word it in his own way. I could tell he was really learning and I'm glad he had an open mind instead. Things I said: - There is only 21 million bitcoin forever, it's impossible to print. USD is printed unlimitedly. So unlimited dollars get divided into 21 million units, making each of those 21 million units more valuable. - SP500 grows 7%

Thinking of using Electrum wallet…

My BTC has been in cold storage in a paper wallet for some time. Recently read of someone getting hacked from a paper wallet, which has quite scared me! So today I was looking into wallets. I’m not too keen on a hardware wallet, so looking at software wallets I found Electrum to be very feature rich and rated good or acceptable across the board (according to bitcoin.org). Before using it, has anyone got any gotchas, tips, or advice? Especially when it comes to transferring from the paper wallet to Electrum. Or if you think there is a better software wallet (Windows compatible) let me know what it is and why. Last, I noted that Electrum does allow connecting to a hardware wallet. Am I missing anything in terms of security or usability by not getting a hardware wallet? Submitted July 30, 2023 at 05:33PM by Dramatic-Battle-9737 https://ift.tt/NTc6lMd

why do you need a cold wallet?

If you are saving bitcoin in cold storage, long term, for the future, why do you need to have a ledger/cold card, when you already have your 24 word key? If you have no intention to trade or spend your coin isn’t the electronic device just another potential point of weakness? Isn’t it safer to just preserve your private word key? WikiLeaks, after Mastercard, Visa and other major payment processors illegally blocked payments, turned to Bitcoin and made 50,000% returns. People still wonder what usecases Bitcoin has.

After WikiLeaks was blamed for sharing classified information that the US government didn't like at all, the US Government illegally forced payment processors including Visa, Mastercard, PayPal and others to block payments to them. Come June 2011, when they started accepting Bitcoin donations. In fact, they wanted to do so earlier, but Satoshi himself asked Julian Assange not to turn to Bitcoin, because he thought that since it was in its early stages, the government interest in Bitcoin would bring unnecessary trouble for them. Here's what Satoshi had to say about it: "The project needs to grow gradually so the software can be strengthened along the way. I make this appeal to WikiLeaks not to try to use bitcoin. Bitcoin is a small beta community in its infancy. You would not stand to get more than pocket change, and the heat you would bring would likely destroy us at this stage." Julian Assange agreed with this, and decided to wait it out. Half a year later, in

That was a tldr Now for the story I’ve started reading The Bitcoin Standard and my parents got curious on why I’m reading it as they’ve hardly seen me reading any books. This is when I started prepping the orange pill for them. I took in a deep breath first. I explained how bitcoin not only works as a currency, but also as a payment network and a store of value. Told them about mining and how difficulty increases every four years. Talked about its decentralized character and how no one could print it, effectively preventing inflation. Compared it with gold, explained how it’s even better (as they’re huge believers in using gold as store of value). The moment of truth came when I downloaded a lightning wallet in my dad’s phone. Let him scan his phone using mine, and within 2 seconds, he received the fund. I told them this action just

Just wanting to get a feel for what others are doing as I know no other Bitcoiners IRL. I’m 32yo and got married in 2020 around the same time as we experienced lock downs. My work moved to fully remote, so my wife and I moved in with my parents to save up for a down-payment on a house. I had always been interested in BTC but really started studying it once I was making enough money to invest the excess after bills. The more I began to understand Bitcoin, the more I realized it’s an extraordinary time to stack sats and went all in. 100% of net worth going into BTC. Bought at 16k, 65k and everywhere in between. Conviction leads to laser-eyed focus. I went from making $50k in 2019 to $270k last year (software engineer) — saved on rent by living with my parents and eating at home, and stacked like a mad man. My wife is on the same page and understands this is a temporary situation for a better future. Some family members don’t get it but they don’t need to. What measures are y’all tak

End game Bitcoin theory

So, been buying bitcoin for about 3 years now and am starting to realize something. The secret is out, big banks and governments get it. They get that bitcoin is the end game of currency and they need to start participating or it's very possible that they won't be needed 20 years from now. However, lots and lots of people still don't understand bitcoin and possibly worse, maybe people see it as something they want to buy, but then sell later when it gets to $100k or $200k per coin. However, even at let's say $200k, you'll need to sell your bitcoin to someone, and who's going to have the USD cash to buy your bitcoin, it's going to be the banks, the blackrocks, the vanguards, with infinite money supply and eventually, let's say 10+ years from now, they can simply run up bitcoin to $1 million USD per coin and buy every single coin in circulation. Once they have all the bitcoin, they'll create a monetary system based on bitcoin so we all feel good about

Mass hacking of over 1000 bitcoin accounts...

Hi everyone! In this post I’d like to discuss a very strange situation that happened on July 12 this year with my (and it seems not only mine) bitcoin wallet. Some input about my setup Since 2018, I've been using a Bitcoin Core wallet (full node, but slightly cut down with a log block limit of about 30 GB + headers, etc.) on my own server (Ubuntu 16.04). The wallet was used not only to store BTC, but also periodically to deposit and withdraw BTC. Interacted with the node locally on my server. The mnemonic for the current wallet was generated in 2020 using this library: bitcore-mnemonic + bitcore-lib . The mnemonic was stored on the server, and also in my encrypted file with keys (strongbox), I did not decrypt it and did not use it in open form from the moment it was generated and placed in the wallet, because there was no need for it. Several backups of wallet.dat also resided on the server and never left it. Only I exclusively had access to the server via SSL, it was done f

Anyone ever try to exchange pre 90's Mexican Pesos for USD at the bank, because you can't. A case for BTC.

This was a little wake up call about world fiat, it's super temporary. I was given about 1000 MXN Pesos recently that are from the 1980's thinking I'd get roughly $60 (the current rate). I assumed I could exchange this for USD at my bank, which you can, but not these Pesos. They are too old. I guess Mexico issued a new Peso system that makes these notes "expired". This just increased my confidence in the case for BTC as money. I also have some old USD Bills from 1934 that arent worth much more than their face value after researching, and are only becoming worth less due to inflation of course. I'm not even sure they will necessarily accept those, even though they absolutely SHOULD. I will see if they do accept them, and if so, I'm buying BTC with the proceeds. “In a free market of currencies, the hardest money always wins”

For those of you wondering about the future success of Bitcoin, and/or invest in altcoins, this is a really important concept IMHO This was a quote from Matt O’Dell recently on a podcast. It really resonates to me, and most importantly is consistent with human history and human behavior. Money throughout history has only been an idea of “what value represents” evidenced by things that were used as money in the past such as sea shells and large stones as examples. Gold of course won in this “free market” in the past, given some of its similar properties to Bitcoin I see the current marketplace of digital money in the same way….for me it’s logical that this marketplace of “cryptocurrencies” exists, as people try and figure out through trial and error what is the best money. But again IMO, Bitcoin is it. It’s digital gold, and there is nothing else that will displace it. Submitted July 22, 2023 at 05:15PM by Neat-Finger197 https://ift.tt/JZW5lzk

I think coinbase is scamming me. The company not a random person

I bought a whole Bitcoin on June 28th. I waited a week and tried to send it. It said my Account was restricted. I contacted support which is only available through a chat feature and asked what’s up They said the earliest I can receive my own bitcoin was sept 1 at the earliest I asked if this was in their terms and to point me to where it says you have to wait over two months to send your own Bitcoin to your own wallet. They didn’t respond to that. I then asked to talk to a human. They said ok someone will call me. Luckily I said “when?” They said 2-5 days. Today is day 7. No one called I contacted their support again today and they claimed “coinbase does not provide call support” I then said “so the agent before you lied to me” They then suggested that I wait till sept 1. Is this legal? What do I do? This seems so unbelievably scammy. And the worst part is my grandparents died and they left me 36k so I bought a Bitcoin with it trying to be responsible. Can you imagine 30k f

Came for the moon, stayed for societal improvement

Just my humble opinion: My story of BTC discovery likely not unusual…scoffed at it in 2018 and made fun of the people who stayed in at $20,000 when it went to $2000. Dabbled in altcoins before realizing that BTC is the 800 pound gorilla in the room, finally bought in 2021. Haven’t looked back since. All this to say: humans think in linear terms, but (again just my opinion) we are going to see exponential growth in BTC “down the road”. I’m actually happy when it dips, since I can accumulate more sats. One day again “down the road” I hope to borrow against it with a (by then) reputable BTC lending company. IF one/several BTC ETFs get approved, this is going to catalyze a lot more investment in BTC, as reportedly there are trillions of dollars waiting on the sidelines for an “easier” way to invest. All this to say, PA between $15,000 - $69,000 is irrelevant, and since 70% of all coins haven’t moved in over a year, there must be plenty of others who share my opinion Submitted July

Would a company that runs a Bitcoin ETF have to buy Bitcoin or would they sell unbacked IOUs?

When Blackrock and other companies finally get the green light to run a Bitcoin ETF, how would that work? When investors put money into the ETF, do they buy Bitcoin for it? Or do they do nothing and just tell you "If you want to sell your shares again, we'll by them for a price that matches the ROI you would have had if you invested in BTC"? The Gold Bugs are advertising Bitcoin's permissionless utility....

'The Peter Schiff Show,' episode 907, July 16, 2023, 'Dollar Breakdown Confirms Lower Inflation Is Transitory".' Time stamp: 14:35. Bitcoin's incentives are so strong that even its loudest critics will advertise (consciously or unconsciously) its usefulness to the Individual. In this case, and for several minutes, during this episode, Mr. Schiff points out the obvious/correct reasons why an ETF is unnecessary for accumulating and self-custody of bitcoin. Unfortunately for his gold stocks, he also advertises why bitcoin is a more competitive option to storing wealth than gold. Thanks Mr. Schiff! Keep doing good work. I wonder how long it will take before Peter Schiff starts accepting satoshis for his hard work....when he does, I think he'll no longer bother spending his time shilling supplements and geriatric-targeted ads. The Final USD Price

The Legend, Hal Finney, in 2009 predicted a price for BTC if it were to become the world's dominate currency and calculated a price of $10 million USD per BTC. Amusing Thought Experiment Since then, coins have been lost, fiat inflation has continued to do its thing but so has Bitcoin. So this brings me to my question, is Hal Finney's amusing thought experiment equal to the final USD price? When BTC hits a USD price that makes it equal to the worlds wealth ($10 million USD in 2009), then the entire planet is denominated in Satoshi's. When every good or service can be paid for via Satoshi's and Dollar's is when we see Dollar's become irrelevant. I feel that in the future Finney's Amusing Thought Experiment will be viewed as the Final USD Price. Arguably up there with E =MC2. Does non-KYC even matter at this point

I’m guessing 95%+ of the bitcoin owned is KYC. As an American privacy is certainly important to many of us. But what are some reasons that KYC is just fine, in your opinion? We could always just move countries if we have to but like when crossing the border the today, they still ask if you’re carrying over 10K of cash. Couldn’t they do the same with bitcoin if they know you own it? Submitted July 10, 2023 at 05:48PM by SecretPrimary7181 https://ift.tt/59pCtQD

Genuine question, no virtue signaling involved. If you buy or sell Bitcoin regularly and use something else, I'm curious as to what factors makes you prefer other options over Bisq. One of the things about bitcoin that i really like...

... is that a lot of the people who are early adopters are wise and ethical people. they understand keeping an open mind, the see the inherent unfairness of fiat system, they have a low time preference, they are smart, they care about the future generations. the fiat based, hyper-capatalistic, uber consuming, system rewards greedy psychopaths who will step over their own mother to make a buck. id much rather have the wise, empathetic visionaries at the controls, ya dig? and we will! A little epiphany after being in this space for years

The longer you’re here, the more you end up reframing your world views upon reflection. It sounds like a cult, but it’s really just a lens of perspective gained through education that can’t be unseen. While rewatching Deadwood, I was just thinking about how gold, a useful mineral in electronics today, back then was just a shiny rock with value because of perception and scarcity. Its supply was limited by how much people could find. And people found a lot! Supplies were very expensive with people trading lumps or gold for whatever they needed to continue prospecting. “How much you gettin’ there?” Carlton Lassiter from Psych asked his claim neighbor. Gold was actually cheap by today’s standards, but scarcity has reigned supreme over time. The value of gold was the amount it took to convince a prospector to prospect. “Enough for whiskey, p****, and food from the Gem Saloon.” Suddenly, white people flooded native land and used made-up laws that the natives were excluded from in order to

Mine bitcoin to consume my solar energy

Hello, I have installed 32 solar panels on my home and I often produce too much energy for my installation (more than 10kw) when it's à bit sunny. Some People recommended me to install big light spots to consume my energy but I was thinking that maybe I could turn some of computers that lay around at home as bitcoin mining to consumue my energy instead of just loosing it. I know nothing about bitcoin mining and even if it's doable with "home" computer. I dont care if the production is not optimal I just need to use my energy to avoid the overproduction. What happens to your Bitcoin after you die?

Have been and avid bitcoiner and stacker for the past 18 months or so. I have my stack on a cold wallet. In case of my death, my wife knows how to find the wallet. But what if we both die? What if one does not trust their spouse to know where their BTC is anyway for that matter? How do you leave your BTC wealth to your kids/family in your untimely death? How to pass along seed or keys without them being compromised? I've been thinking about using a safety deposit box, but then again I'm relying on a brick & mortar bank. Further, how secure are are safety deposit boxes anyway? Seems like there should be a better solution. A major downside to "not your keys, not your coins" is that anyone who comes across your seed can take your coins. Trezor has an option where you split your seed phrase into three separate parts and 2 parts are needed to access wallet. One idea I had was to utilize this method, and place single portion of seed into three separate safety deposit

hey guys what wallet are you using to store your bitcoin?

A while ago I was thinking about buying a ledger, but after all the problems I had, I'm avoiding it, I thought about buying a coldcard, but in Brazil it's unavailable and it's very expensive, I'm thinking about the trezor model one, but the entry usb-A bothers me kkkk any tips to help me? 10 Ways to Lose your Bitcoin: A Retrospective

I've been around a while, and I was thinking today about the myriad of ways people have been separated from their coins over the years. Off the top of my head: Internet Theft Your money was stolen by thieves via an insecure hot wallet, malware, a clever phishing scheme, or otherwise unwittingly exposing your keys to the internet. You Forgot You lost or forgot keys, passphrases, hidden seed locations, etc. Perhaps you threw an old hard drive away. Or possibly, you had an overcomplicated "high security" setup you neglected to document. Counterparty bankruptcy You left coins on an exchange or other custodian that went bankrupt. Altcoin Hype Amidst the narrative that some newer, more innovative coin may well overtake bitcoin, you "diversified" into altcoins. In 2017, this was the market-savvy view and there was enormous hype. Yield Farming Bubble You wanted MORE bitcoin for your bitcoin. 12% guaranteed interest? What could go wrong? Biggest regret ill probably carry through my entire life.

I became aware of crypto late 2017. After waiting for bitcoin to correct for nearly 3 years i bought 2.33 at 4500 each. I was so happy. Looking forward to when btc was a mil each. Fast forward life got heavy, had to take my investment out. Saw it reach 60k per. Watching it now getting ready to split 100k in 2. I just recovered financially now and going to start dca slowly again but hell, the fact that ill never hold that amount of btc again kills me everyday. Edit: want to say thank you to everyone sharing their experience and their 2c. I didnt post this to seek anything. However this is the only place i can find people i can relate to about this matter. Sometimes you do get tunnelvisioned on shoulda woulda coulda, and hearing others helps alot. Submitted July 04, 2023 at 12:51PM by DyviumL https://ift.tt/zF0GWgm

In a world full of uncertainty there will only be 21M Bitcoin

There are currently ~19,418,368 bitcoins in existence, that’s 92.6% issued. This number increases by 6.25 BTC every 10 minutes, when new blocks are mined. Every four years, the issuance rate halves. It's estimated that the final bitcoin will be mined by the year 2140. If a Bitcoin is lost or destroyed, it cannot be recovered, which can lead to a decrease in the total supply, and an increase in their overall value due to scarcity. Bitcoin is like our time; scarce and valuable. Submitted July 04, 2023 at 02:57AM by itfwg https://ift.tt/FYKh7eS

Never buying on PayPal ever again

So, I sold some concert tickets on Stubhub and received payment via PayPal. Haven't used them in a while, but I still have an active account. I figured, why not buy BTC there and send it to my wallet instead of "cashing out". No problem buying, but trying to send it to my wallet has been an absolute nightmare. First, they say they are sending a code to my phone to verify my identity. The same number that they send a code to to verify my identity when I log into the account. Click "send code" it just says "cannot verify identity. No code ever showed up. Contact customer service. That's a joke. AI bot sends me to a chat with a representative. They say they will send a push notification when a representative is available. They never did. This morning, I try again. Now, they ask for a drivers license and a scan of my face. Fine, I don't care about KYC here. Done. Finally verify my identity! Problem solved? Absolutely not. Now it just says, cannot send

Kraken withdrawal fee still at "temporary" 20x increase

The mempool is pretty much back to normal, sitting pretty at 10 sat/vB or about $0.43... So whats up with Kraken still keeping the BTC withdrawal fee at over $6? They promptly increased the fee because of the congested mempool few months ago, bringing it from 1000 sats to 20,000 sats, a 20-fold increase. And here we are now, still having to massively overpay for our withdrawals, even though it's nowhere near the levels where they justified the drastic fee increase. It more and more looks like they are profiting on it, and would not bring them down anytime soon, if ever. https://preview.redd.it/e1ahcbrpsl9b1.png?width=1324&format=png&auto=webp&v=enabled&s=48a53ae2f428d06e05bd0fb9afaf1355a664e0ab Submitted July 03, 2023 at 12:45AM by handgrip_shingle https://ift.tt/hd4nKsW

I read the Bitcoin Standard and had this question about Keynesian economics?

In the book, it argues that when you have a deflationary currency (gold, bitcoin) as the world reserve, it encourages saving for multiple generations and has inspired many great human feats such as the Sistine Chapel and the industrial revolution. Meanwhile, an inflationary currency as the world reserve leads to society going for a quick buck (suburban sprawl destroying farmland/nautral land in favor of houses that take up too much space, goods built to be thrown away, less incentive to save due to savings being debased, etc) However, I do think that Keynesian economics has somewhat of a point when they say: An inflationary currency encourages spending, which spurs up economic activity due to the money being recirculated into the economy. Whereas a deflationary currency encourages hoarding of economic energy, and not recirculating it back into the economy. Is this a valid argument? Why is it not a valid argument? Bitcoin lowers time preference

My wife likes to spend as much money as she can, putting some away for a rainy day. The only reason she would save is if she has a purchase in mind. Her reasoning is that inflation is always happening, so why not spend money now, because otherwise you are just losing money to inflation. I like to save money for the sake of saving, without a purchase in mind. Saving money feels good for me, but not just because it provides safety. Its kind of like a game. I find comfort in knowing that "my" number keeps growing. Whenever I tell this to my wife, she gives me strange look, and tries to find someplace to spend the money on. Basically, she wants to spend every penny I'm trying to save  Half a year ago, I started reading Bitcoin standard, and it has changed my perspective on money and economy. I communicated that to my wife and it seems that it has also changed her perspective. We started saving in Bitcoin half a year ago, and have already accumulated a good chunk of sa

Seeing DCA strategy been discussed a lot. But what about a "ladder-down" limit order strategy? Let me know your thought please!

Hey all, I'm trying to come up with a strategy to add some more sats in the 2nd half of the year for the the next bull run. Given I already hold some, I don't want to chase any pump or fomo in. So instead of a traditional time-based DCA strategy, I'm thinking maybe it's a better idea to "ladder-down" limit buy orders based on price (don't know if there's a better name for this). Below is an example. https://preview.redd.it/26bywffnhf9b1.png?width=312&format=png&auto=webp&v=enabled&s=8e3ccfc813d016096de6f2079cc292264cadd3fd IMO, comparing to DCA, this has at least 2 advantages - I personally view price as risk. This means I only buy when the risk is lower and automatically avoid it when risk is higher. This allows me to capture the downside volatility, aka "wicks". Those are not very uncommon for BTC and a limit order is basically the only way to capture them. There are also 2 disadvantages - If the price goes sidewa

wallet for total n00b

Let me preface this with an apology as I'm sure this content is repeated ad nauseam. I'm late to the bitcoin game, and just bought a small amount- <$200 worth. At this low level is it safe to keep it on Coinbase, or should I invest in a wallet? I searched the sub, and most of the responses were above my understanding at this point. So basically I'm looking for the most complete begginer wallet that won't allow me to screw myself over somehow. Thanks in advance! What is a large amount?

In the next couple of years I imagine a lot of us will be tempted to sell some of their bags. Something that I haven't done, personally, since 2018.... I have looked into OTC but they all say "if you're looking to buy/sell a large amount and don't want to move the market...." So what is a large amount? 1? 10? 100? Btc? How to sell on BISQ and get EUR into my Wise account without risk?

Hello, I have a (Transfer)Wise bank account, and I also trade on BISQ. However, Wise is hostile to BTC. If I use BISQ's Wise transfer method, I risk getting my account shut down. It's very unfair, but my Wise account is quite useful to me so this is a risk I cannot afford to take. In previous years, I would use the SEPA transfer method. However, my SEPA bank account was closed -- essentially because I was away from Europe for a long time. In order to get a new SEPA account, I would need to return to Europe. That's a big hassle for a digital nomad like me. Does anybody have any creative ideas about how I can transfer money to Wise safely? Is there an account I can set up somewhere using just my passport photocopy which can function as a safe intermediary and won't be flagged by Wise? Maybe there is some new financial resource that has sprung up over the past couple of years that I am overlooking? Submitted July 01, 2023 at 05:47AM by NodeTraverser https://ift.tt/
